A Connecticut man who was accused of killing his 70-year-old ex-wife has been found dead in a storage container following a five-hour stand-off with police.

James C. Taylor, 75, was arrested in February in Fairfield, Connecticut, and charged with murdering his ex-wife Catherine Taylor, 70, in her home.

He was free on a $2million bond when authorities received a report that his GPS monitoring bracelet was receiving a low signal before the battery died on Tuesday just after 5pm.

Officers were immediately dispatched to his home on Bronson Road where they tried contacting him multiple times through family members and his phone numbers, according to a police statement.

While calling Taylor's cell phone, officer heard it ringing inside a storage container that was locked from the inside.

Authorities took 'a slow and methodical approach to gaining access to the storage container' with the help of a bomb squad and multiple police departments.

Once police determined there was no threat to their safety, they were able to open the storage unit, which led to the discovery of Taylor's body inside around 10pm.

Fairfield Capt Robert Kalamaras said it appeared that Taylor had committed suicide.

Taylor was arrested in early February after he burst into his ex-wife's home that she shared with her son and shot her dead.

Moments before the murder, police say Catherine was using an iPad app that showed Taylor's real-time location as a precaution after she filed a police report two days prior claiming he had stolen two pickup trucks from her.

The stepson told police that he heard breaking glass in the home on the night of the murder, and was in the midst of calling 911 when he heard gunshots from upstairs.

He said he rushed to see what was happening and got into a struggle with Taylor, who was visibly injured in his booking mugshot.

'The son was fighting for his life,' Kalamaras told WTIC-TV.

The attack occurred in this home where Catherine lived with her son. Taylor lived just around the block, in a home he and Catherine had shared on and off over the years

Catherine was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although Catherine and James had been divorced for 25 years, they had recently rekindled their relationship, the Hartford Courant reported.

At times, they were living together on Redding Road, less than 150 yards from the home on Catamount Road where the shooting occurred.

After several reconciliations and breakups with her ex, Catherine had been living with her son in the house on Catamount Road in recent days.

Police say that there seemed to be a dispute over who owned the two trucks.

Catherine and her son quickly found one of the trucks, and the other was recovered by police at the home of a mutual family friend, police say.

Capt Kalamaras said that neither Catherine nor Taylor had a history of domestic violence charges.

However, Taylor was convicted of assault in an altercation with a foreman who worked at the nursery on his property in 2014.

Taylor was charged with murder, attempted murder, home invasion, first-degree burglary, third-degree assault, and illegal discharge of a firearm.
