The Pentagon has identified the U.S. service member who was killed in an apparent insider attack in southern Afghanistan on Saturday.

The Department of Defense announced Sunday that Army Cpl. Joseph Maciel of South Gate, California, died of wounds sustained during an attack in Tarin Kowt District, Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan.

Maciel and two other US soldiers were advising local forces at an Afghan military facility on Saturday when the 'apparent insider attack' occurred, CNN reported.

The two as-yet-unnamed soldiers were wounded during the attack and said to be undergoing treatment and in stable condition.

Maciel was assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Georgia. Task Force 1-28 Infantry is currently deployed in support of the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade.

'Cpl. Maciel was an excellent Soldier beloved by his teammates and dedicated to our mission. He will be greatly missed by the entire Black Lion family. Our prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,' Lt. Col. David Conner, Maciel's battalion commander, said in a news release obtained by ABC 7.

Maciel joined the Army two years ago and had been serving in Afghanistan since February.

He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal and Afghanistan Campaign Medal, according to the DoD.

Maciel was part of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, which performs counter-terrorism missions against remaining al Qaeda members and the local ISIS affiliate, in addition to supporting Afghan security forces.

A local police officer told AFP that the shooting happened at the airport in Tarinkot, the capital of Uruzgan province.

On Twitter, the Taliban also gave Uruzgan as the location.

'A patriot Afghan soldier opened fire on Americans in Uruzgan airport killing and wounding at least four American invaders,' the militant group said.

Currently, there are about 14,000 US troops in Afghanistan, providing the main component of the NATO mission there to support and train local forces.

The so-called 'green-on-blue' attack is the latest in a series of incidents in which Afghan forces have turned their weapons on international troops with whom they are working.

The most recent previous 'green-on-blue' insider attack occurred in August 2017 when a Romanian NATO soldier was killed. The last US casualty from an insider attack occurred in June 2017.

The incident leading to Maciel's death is under investigation.
