Colleges are often derided for their snowflake students.

But, rather ironically, fallen leaves have become a reason to celebrate one U.S. university - after a member of staff turned them into art installations.

Joanna Hedrick, a counselor at Sacramento State University, has become an internet sensation in recent weeks thanks to her seasonal creations which grace the institution's grounds.

The mother-of-two, who's also recently completed a philosophy degree, has been making the gingko leaf installations since 2013, when she wanted to make an interesting backdrop for family photos.

Inspired by British artist Andy Goldsworthy OBE, who's well-known for his land art visions, she soon began raking the campus foliage into a series of aesthetic arrangements.

Visually impressive for their painstaking arrangement and attention to detail, they instantly delighted students and academic peers alike.

As her images illustrate, some of the designs take the form of spirals and circles, while others morph into intricate mazes and honeycomb. Each one takes roughly three hours to complete.

Currently, the artistic counsellor only manages six installations per year, but - after posting images of her work online - the demand has grown.

Her Instagram account has now amassed more than 680 followers and its content has gone somewhat viral.

'[My art] is about taking something that’s already beautiful and making something unique—something you don’t just pass by,' Hedrick told Sactown Magazine.  

One recent post saw her create an interpretation of the sun, complete with powerful rays, while another spelled out an acronym for one college campus: CSUS.

To celebrate Thanksgiving, last month, she shared a snap of the famous interlocking yin/yang symbol. She captioned it: 'Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. A little reminder to keep balance in your life.'
