Rugby league superstar Jarryd Hayne has been accused of rape in a civil suit filed in an American court - claiming the cross-code athlete committed the alleged assault during his brief stint in the NFL.
The civil court documents filed in California on Tuesday accuse the 29-year-old of engaging in non-consensual sexual intercourse in the early hours of December 21, 2015 with a woman known as 'Ms V'.
The case was reviewed by the District Attorney on October 25, 2016, but was rejected due to insufficient evidence.
The suit states the victim was afraid to come forward at the time and was a virgin when the alleged rape took place.
Documents say Ms V was a local to the Santa Clara area and worked in a restaurant.
She was familiar with an 'acquaintance' of Hayne and met him following a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The suit also alleges incidents of gender violence, sexual battery and emotional distress and negligence.
Ms V reported the alleged rape to police in May last year.

The suit was filed in Santa Clara County court overnight, accusing the 29-year-old of engaging in non-consensual sexual intercourse in 2015 with a woman known as 'Ms V'
Civil court documents filed in a Californian court claim 'Ms V' was 'heavily intoxicated' on the night the alleged incident occurred.
According to the suit, Hayne and his group met up with the woman and her friends. At the end of the evening, Hayne took Ms V back to his house via an Uber, 'despite having minimal interaction that night.'
Documents say she has no memory of how she got to Hayne's house. The suit claims she remembers seeing the silhouette of a man with similar build to the NRL star, before being grabbed and turned around 'so she was no longer facing him.'
The suit claims Ms V says the man told her 'no kissing' before she felt a sharp pain in her vagina. She says the woke the next day naked in a 'large pool of blood' and still with 'significant vaginal pain'.

She contacted a teammate of Hayne after the alleged rape, civil court documents say, who spoke to the Australian and said he denied the claims. 'Ms V' then claims she contacted Hayne through Instagram, who admitted the pair 'hooked up'
The civil suit says the woman was scared to tell police, claiming she was worried she would be discredited or blamed for making allegations against a professional athlete.

Hayne's agent, Wayne Beavis, told the Daily Telegraph he was unaware of the claims on Wednesday.
Madison Marcus Law Firm issued a statement Hayne's behalf, who 'unequivocally and vehemently' denied the claims.
'Mr Hayne has not been served with any proceedings or formal complaint relating to the incident,' the statement read, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
'Mr Hayne previously addressed a complaint made to the District Attorney's office in the County of Santa Clara, California in 2016 and the District Attorney did not proceed any further with the matter due to insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations. Mr Hayne provided all reasonable assistance to the District Attorney with that investigation.
'Mr Hayne unequivocally and vehemently denies the allegations which are the subject of the civil complaint. Mr Hayne will not be making any further comment in relation to this matter.'

The Parramatta Eels released a statement on their star played on Wednesday afternoon, saying they were previously unaware of the allegations.
'The Club has been made aware of serious allegations regarding Jarryd Hayne during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. We were unaware of these allegations until they were made public today.
'As with any legal matter, it is important that we follow due process and ensure that we review all relevant information available, including giving Jarryd the opportunity to respond.
'The Club will continue to monitor the situation and when appropriate we will provide an update to Members and media.'
Hayne sensationally left the Parramatta Eels and rugby league to join the San Francisco 49ers in 2015.
He played eight games for the team, including 17 carries for 51 yards and six catches for 27 yards. He also had three fumbles.
The team chose not to re-sign him the following season, and decided to play Rugby Sevens for Fiji after no other NFL teams approached him.
He returned to the NRL last year and joined the Gold Coast Titans. He announced last month he would be released from his record $1.2 million contract to return to Parramatta for the 2018 season.
