These horrifying images show the cruel truth of the dog meat trade in Indonesia, where around one million pets are slaughtered for food each year.
Footage shows how pet dogs are snatched from homes, tied up, stuffed in plastic sacks and shoved into tiny cages.
They are then transported to slaughter houses where they are brutally killed and beheaded in front of each other.
While only a minority of Indonesians eat dog meat, there has been an increase in popularity, which in addition to outrage over animal cruelty, has authorities worried about the spreading of rabies.
Horrific: A dog looks on as a man beheads another animal at a slaughter house in Indonesia
Cruel: The animals are thrown into plastic burlap sacks or bags and bound with string
Heartbreaking: Several live dogs lie waiting for death as the butchers skin another dog
Many of the animals are stolen family pets and illegally trafficked dogs collected from the streets and rural communities across Indonesia.
They are crammed into cages and sacks with their limbs tied up and their mouths bound shut so tight that they can hardly breathe.
Video footage show pets bleeding from the mouths and paws as the plastic used cuts into their skin.
They are taken on long journeys on bikes or in overcrowded trucks to supply markets, slaughterhouses and restaurants, and many of the dogs die from suffocation, dehydration or heatstroke before they reach their final destination.
Upon arrival, they are dragged out of their cages and thrown onto hard concrete floors, where they are forced to watch other dogs brutally slaughtered in front of them while they wait for death.
Disgusting: A dog tied up in a plastic burlap sack with its mouth bound shut lies unable to move or make a noise on the concrete floor, looking onto the bodyparts of other dogs
Transport: A handful of dogs tied in sacks, some who have not survived the journey, lie in a heap on the back of a truck
Lost: Many of the dogs who end up slaughtered for meat are family pets who have been stolen by traffickers
Unimaginable: A dog covered in blood whimpers as it is thrown into the heap of other pets
Trade: Around one million dogs are butchered and eaten in Indonesia every year
Method: A man working in a slaughter house burns the fur off a dead dog
Meat: Dogs who have had the skin burned off are lined up to be butchered
While only around seven per cent of the population - the country's non-Muslim minorities - eat dog, Indonesia still kills around one million for consumption every year.
In some areas, dog meat is considered a traditional type of food, and its consumption is often linked to certain festivities or family celebrations such as weddings and baptisms.
As in many other parts of Asia, dog meat is also consumed for it’s perceived health properties, such as curing skin problems, dengue fever and asthma, as a general boost for the immune system, or improving male stamina.
In the area of Solo, for example, dog meat stalls promote dog meat as ‘Jamu’ (traditional medicine).
Reduced to parts: Some seven per cent of the Indonesian population eat dog meat, but it is reportedly increasing in popularity
Waiting for death: Dogs are crammed into cages at a meat market in Indonesia
Risk: Indonesian authorities are worried that the consumption of dog meat is spreading rabies across the country
Trade: A meat market in Indonesia, where dogs are either sold alive or slaughtered on site
A large majority of Indonesia is Muslim, and and do not eat dog meat as it is considered 'haram' - forbidden - in Islam
Aside from the cruel treatment of dogs before slaughter, the increased consumption of their meat has been blamed for the spread of rabies in Indonesia.
The unsanitary conditions of slaughterhouses and the unknown health status of dogs slaughtered for consumption are concerning authorities, with those involved in the dog meat trade – traders, slaughterers, vendors and consumers – at further risk of being exposed to rabies and other zoonotic diseases.
