This is the terrifying moment a family were forced to remove a deadly-looking spider from their pool as they prepared for an afternoon swim.

A video of the scary encounter at the home in Newcastle, north of Sydney, was uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday.

The spider, which beared a striking resemblance to the deadly Sydney funnel-web, was fished out with a pool scoop and placed into a jar.

The clip shows a man with a pool scoop as his young son films.

'You got him… I bet he's (spider) happy,' the young boy says.

Armed with gloves the father scoops the spider out and lays it gently on the ground. He then places the spider in a jar.

But it looks like the swim may have killed the arachnid, as it is not moving.

'He's not showing many signs of life,' the father says. He looks very dead.'

After closer inspection, the spider was revealed to be a Trapdoor.

The arachnids are 2.5 centimetres long on average but they can grow up to 4 centimetres and are often mistaken for funnel-web spiders.

The bites of trapdoors are not dangerous, but may cause minor pain and swelling.
