The horrific effects of dyeing your hair blonde revealed: Woman shares how years of bleaching ruined her locks - and the simple treatment that fixed them

  • Fitness model Deni Kirkova revealed what a decade of dyeing her hair blonde did
  • The 29-year-old said incessant dyeing made her strands broken and lacklustre
  • Even days after visiting the hairdresser, Deni said her hair looked 'straw-like'
  • She visited a salon to dye her hair back to its normal colour - brunette

A fitness model has revealed how years of dyeing her hair blonde nearly ruined her locks - and how she fixed them for good.

Deni Kirkova, 29, from Melbourne, said she had been dyeing her naturally brown hair blonde for 'close to a decade' - when she realised what she was really doing to her strands.

'I was taken by lightness and length. But chasing it was wrecking my hair - and my bank balance,' Deni wrote on her blog Glowing Up.

While her artificially-dyed blonde locks would look fabulous right after leaving the hairdresser, often Deni said within a week they were back to their dry and broken ways.

'Despite loving being a blonde, I was in denial about the true state of my hair most of the time,' she said.

'If I was really honest with myself, I knew that bleach dries and damages hair, badly. No matter how many times I said "oh but I only do balayage" and piled on the hair masks, my hair felt brisly.'

But still the 29-year-old said she couldn't resist lightness.

Over the years, Deni said she used dye, balayage and hair extensions to achieve the super blonde, long hair she wanted.

'I only went to fancy salons yet all my before pictures depicted crinkled straw despite copious treatments and Olaplex,' she said.

'After a hair makeover, my blonde hair would be back to straw in a couple of weeks.'

Taking matters into her own hands several months ago, Deni decided it was time to say goodbye to blonde hair - and go back to her natural hue (pictured)

How did Deni fix her hair?

* She stopped bleaching it blonde.

* She quit with hair extensions.

* She had a haircut and returned to her natural colour, but added a little deepness and richness to it.

* She started using Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Colour Freeze Sulphate-Free products to help retain the colour and Fanola After Colour products to nourish her hair.

Taking matters into her own hands several months ago, Deni decided it was time to say goodbye to blonde hair - and go back to her natural hue.

'A few months ago I finally went brunette: my natural colour but a little deeper and richer,' she said.

'I think it was a manifestation of wanting to be more authentic, natural and confident in my own skin; something deeply encouraged in me by my new loving partner.'

The 29-year-old fitness model also said she has since sworn off extensions, Botox and fillers.

Deni visited a salon in Melbourne called Heading Out, where she had her hair cut and a subtle deep colour added (pictured now) - and she said she can already see the difference in her hair

Deni visited a salon in Melbourne called Heading Out, where she had her hair cut and a subtle deep colour added.

And she has already noticed the difference without bleach.

'My hair looks shinier, it feels stronger, the split ends are less obvious and it's easy to maintain,' she said.

Not only does her new brunette hair look better, but Deni also said she feels better as she no longer has to worry about roots and tone and she feels more confident.

'I stayed blonde so long because I truly did enjoy it, despite the damage,' she said (pictured at hairdresser and one week later) - but now she is enjoying taking proper care of her hair

'But now I'm taking proper care of my hair and I'm feeling a calming "returning to the self" by embracing my natural colour.'
