Sanders, Harris and Booker campaigned with anti-gay rights pastor who says 'homosexuality is a sin'

Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker campaigned with anti-gay rights pastor who says 'homosexuality is a sin' and compares it to child molestation

  • Three Democratic Senators running for president in 2020 have aligned themselves with a pastor who says being gay is a sin
  • Sens. Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker are all advocates of LGBTQ rights
  • But in the last month they have all campaigned at Reverend Robert Fowler Sr.'s church in Las Vegas
  • Fowler says being gay is just as much of a sin as child molestation, cheating on taxes or having sex before marriage
  • 'Any sin, if you break the law in one area, you've broken it in all areas. If you mess up in one area, that's enough to send you to hell,' he said

Three front-runner Democratic presidential candidates in the last month have aligned themselves with a pastor who says being gay is 'enough to send you to hell.'

Senators Kamala Harris and Cory Booker attended services at Reverend Robert Fowler Sr.'s Baptist church over the weekend and independent Senator Bernie Sanders held a town hall at the church last month.

Although it's not clear if any of the candidates, who are all ardent supporters of LGBTQ rights, were aware of Fowler's comments on homosexuality, his position on it is no secret.

Democrats on the 2020 primary trail are continuously vying for support in battleground states and areas with a more moderate population. In 2016, Hillary Clinton narrowly won Nevada with 47.9 per cent of the vote compared to Donald Trump's 45.5 per cent.

Aligning themselves with a pastor who preaching being gay is a sin, could lose them some of that support.

'At our church, we don't believe that there's any one sin that's greater than anything else,' Fowler (pictured) said, adding that homosexuality is just as much a sin as being a child molester or cheating on your taxes

'At our church, we don't believe that there's any one sin that's greater than anything else,' Fowler (pictured) said, adding that homosexuality is just as much a sin as being a child molester or cheating on your taxes

In a 2013 radio interview, Fowler said being gay was just as much a sin as being a child molester, cheating on your taxes or having sex before marriage.

'At our church, we don't believe that there's any one sin that's greater than anything else,' he said during the interview at the time.

The leader of Las Vegas' Victory Missionary Baptist Church reiterated that perspective, indicating his views had not changed since 2013, in an interview Sunday night.

'Homosexuality, adultery, fornication, those are all sexual sins addressed in scripture,' he told Bay Area News Group.

'Any sin, if you break the law in one area, you've broken it in all areas. If you mess up in one area, that's enough to send you to hell — so any sin is pretty bad for me,' he said when asked if he believes homosexuality and child molestation are comparable sins.

Over the weekend several 2020 hopefuls made their way to Las Vegas to pitch their visions on labor, economic security and education. The candidates spoke at labor forum at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but the weekend turned to a different tune as two mass shootings rocked the nation.

Booker visited Fowler's church Saturday night, after a 21-year-old gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas – initially killing 20 with that number rising to 22 in the days following – and said he would 'bring the fight' to the NRA.

'I learned in prayer,' Booker told the congregation. 'I wasn't told to duck and cover in the valley of the shadow of death. I was told to keep on walking, keep on moving, keep on marching, and that's what it's going to take.'

During the Sunday morning service, after a second shooting overnight took nine lives in Dayton, Ohio, Harris also spoke to the congregation.

'Whenever that hate reveals itself, it is incumbent on us to speak up and speak out, and it is incumbent upon us to agree that whomever is the subject of the hate should never be made to fight alone,' Harris said, and was met with 'amens.'

Sanders' held his town hall event at the church on July 6. He – and Hillary Clinton – also courted voters there during the 2016 presidential primary.

Fowler has led Victory Baptist, which is just a few miles north of the Vegas strip, since 1996. And it is one of the most influential African-American Baptist congregations in Las Vegas.

Despite visiting the church led by a man who says homosexuality is a sin, all three senators have championed for gay rights.

When Harris and Booker were attorneys in their respective states of California and New Jersey, they both officiated same-sex weddings.

Sanders was one of the few members of the House in the 1990s to oppose the Defense of Marriage Act, which stopped the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage.

The Vermont progressive regularly polls as the No. 2 candidate among the more than two dozen Democrats vying for the party's nomination. In the RealClearPolitics average of national polls, Sanders falls behind Joe Biden with 17.2 per cent support among likely primary voters.

Harris also polls within the top five candidates and on average holds 9.3 per cent support. Booker usually falls outside of the top five candidates, and has less than 2 per cent support among Democratic primary voters.
