The gunman who killed nine people and wounded more than 20 in Dayton, Ohio early Sunday morning was once suspended from high school for drawing up a 'hit list' of girls he wanted to kill.
Connor Betts, 24, was fatally shot by police officers who responded to the scene in the Oregon District, a nightlife and entertainment quarter of the southwestern Ohio city.
While Betts did not have a history of violent crime, new details have emerged indicating that there were early warnings signs of a troubled mind.
Chris Baker, the former principal of Bellbrook High School, told Dayton Daily News that when Betts was a student, he was suspended for writing a 'hit list' of girls he wanted to kill on a bathroom wall.

The incident prompted officials to place the school on lockdown.
'I would not dispute that information, but I don’t want to get involved any more than just making that comment,' Baker said.
One woman who says she attended middle school with Betts claims that he once fantasized about tying her up and slitting her throat.
'This isn’t a mystery to me,' said the classmate. 'I’m furious.'
The woman told Dayton Daily News that Betts was aware of the bizarre nature of the thoughts and was scared of them.
'He knew it wasn’t normal,' the woman said.
'He and I talked at length about him getting help.'
She said she and her parents notified local police. The woman says she felt she was not being taken seriously.
Another woman who went to high school with Betts recalls the hit list episode.
'I know he made the list,' she told WHIO-TV.
'I’m not sure who the names were on there...He had a plan to shoot up the school.'
She said that when she heard about the shooting in Dayton, she immediately thought of Betts.
'I guessed it might’ve been him just from that list,' she said.
She said that Betts was bullied in high school, but that he seemed 'pretty normal' after he got help following the hit list suspension.
Another classmate of Betts's from high school, Demoy Howell, told Dayton Daily News that they both took part in Bellbrook’s Junior ROTC military program.
Howell said that while he never had a problem with Betts, he remembers his friends telling him that they felt 'threatened' and 'uncomfortable' by him.
Howell said that the grueling regimen of the Junior ROTC had a 'calming' effect on Betts.
After the school lockdown incident, however, Betts 'kind of fell off the face of the earth,' according to Howell.
Howell and Betts then met up again when they both worked at a local fast food restaurant.

'He was always a bit of an oddball,' said Howell.
'He had a dark sense of humor - jokes about people dying. He would wear all black.
'I remember sensing a dark energy around him.'
'I think this is less of a hate crime and more of an "I hate everybody" crime.
'I honestly feel more comfortable now knowing that he’s gone.'
Officials with Sinclair Community College said that Betts enrolled in psychology classes in 2017. He was not scheduled to take classes this summer.
'We are actively working with law enforcement to provide any and all information we may have to assist them in the response to this horrific act,' said Steve Johnson, the president of the college.
According to Dayton Daily News, a check of past social media posts by Betts shows pictures on MySpace of notebook sketches depicting weird phrases handwritten in screamo music-style font.
The posts appear to be about a decade old.
Demoy Howell, who went to high school with Betts, said they both participated in Junior ROTC training. Howell says that while he never noticed anything unusual about Betts, his friends told him they felt uncomfortable and threatened around him
The photos include captions that read: 'All Shall Be Annihilated'; 'Bloodlust'; 'Absolute Carnage'; and 'Bloody Massacre.'
Others who knew Betts as an acquaintance said there was nothing that would indicate he could commit such a crime.
Betts was known at a local bar as an ever-friendly, happy guy who sometimes came in for a beer or two and was never a troublemaker.
Fellow customer Mike Kern says he sometimes played trivia with the slain shooter at Romer’s Bar & Grill in Bellbrook, Betts’ hometown southeast of Dayton.
Kern says Betts often knew answers about current events and pop culture and never discussed violence.
Kern describes Betts as 'the nicest kid you could imagine.'
Bartender Andy Baker says Betts was at Romer’s last Monday and seemed fine.
Baker says when he saw Betts identified as the shooter in the early Sunday massacre in a popular entertainment district, he thought: There’s no way that’s the guy.
