Child's body 'highly unlikely' to be boy missing from boat in Torres Strait
Investigations indicate it is "highly unlikely" a child's body found near Old Mawatta Village on mainland Papua New Guinea is that of a missing nine-year-old boy in the Torres Strait, Queensland police say.
The nine-year-old boy is among five people who disappeared on Wednesday after setting off about 3:00pm in a 7-metre boat from Badu Island to Dauan Island.
An empty boat and a bag containing lifejackets were found about approximately 4.5 kilometres west of Dauan Island about 1:50pm on Friday and will be examined by Water Police this week.
Yesterday's search failed to locate any further items.
The water search involves police, government agencies and local volunteers and will be reassessed at the end of the day.
Torres Strait Patrol Group Inspector Mark Lingwood said the search area for the boy and his family — a 22-year-old man, 47-year-old man, 21-year-old woman and a 21-year-old woman — covered about 1,000 square kilometres.
"[We'll] continue to go over ground we've covered and a little bit further," he said.
"The chances diminish at each passing minute … and [we'll] review everything we've done and keep our fingers crossed and say our prayers that we might be successful."
