The company behind Arizona Iced Tea is getting into the marijuana business and entering the market for vape pens and cannabis-infused gummies and drinks.

Arizona Beverage Co. announced on Tuesday that it has reached a licensing deal with Dixie Brands Inc., a Denver-based cannabis company that makes and sells weed vaporizers as well as foods, drinks, and topical creams laced with marijuana.

Officials said the plans for the collaboration are in the early stages and will likely start with an Arizona line of vape pens and gummies.

The products are to be followed by a variety of beverages, which may include tea, lemonade, soda, coffee, or seltzer.

Dixie intends to launch the line in the U.S. before expanding it to Canada and Latin America as part of the deal, which is still subject to approval by Dixie's board.

It also gives Arizona the right to buy a stake of up to $10 million in the cannabis company.

Arizona Iced Tea is a staple at convenience stores and supermarkets all over the country, which may a sign that cannabis-infused products are becoming more mainstream.

Arizona, a private company, is one of the first big American brands to enter the marijuana market.

'You’ve got to be willing to try things,' Arizona CEO Don Vultaggio told the Wall Street Journal of the deal. 'The upside is we’re one of the first ones in an emerging space.'

Other beverage brands have been dipping their toes into the market, with Corona beer maker Constellation Brands signing a deal with cannabis company Canopy Growth Corporation in 2017.

Last year, Lagunitas Brewing, which is owned by Heineken, launched cannabis-infused sparkling water to be sold in select California locations.

There are risks involved with Arizona's partnership, and Vultaggio noted that a publicly traded company would not be able to make the same move.

Marijuana may be legal for recreational use in 11 states and medical use in 33 states, but it still remains prohibited by federal law, which means it can't be transported across state lines.

Profits from marijuana sales can be also restricted from banks, and companies that sell marijuana in the U.S. can't list on major U.S. stock exchanges.

This isn't the first time Arizona has pulled an unexpected marketing move.

In July, the company announced its extremely limited-edition Arizona Iced Tea x Adidas shoe collection that sold for $0.99 a pair at a pop-up in New York City.

However, the rollout turned to chaos with two people being arrested and two others getting hurt as hundreds rushed to get their hands on the sneakers.

The NYPD said they dispersed a large number of the people from the event but did not state that they had canceled pop-up, a point that Arizona claimed on their own social media channels.

'Thanks to our loyal fans that came out to support our partnership with Adidas,' Arizona said on Twitter. 'Due to overwhelming demand and safety concerns, the NYPD shutdown [sic] our pop-up. We sincerely apologize to all our fans that waited in line. We are actively working to remedy the situation.'
