Two dead, two seriously injured after crash on Ottawa highway Sunday
OTTAWA - Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a crash on a major highway in Ottawa left two people dead on Sunday.
The incident happened just before 1 p.m., when officers with the Ontario Provincial Police and Ottawa Police Service were following a vehicle eastbound on Highway 417 as part of an investigation.
Provincial police say the officers stopped due to safety concerns, and a short time later, the vehicle was reportedly travelling east in the westbound lanes of the highway.
Police say the vehicle was then involved in multiple collisions.
They say two people died at the scene, and two people were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police didn't say which vehicle the deceased were from.
They say the Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate, as it does when there are reports of death, serious injury or sexual assault involving police.
