Rex dismisses claims of rust on engine amid safety investigation

Regional Express Airlines (Rex) says a video that claimed to show a rusty propeller shaft on one of its planes does not actually show corrosion.
Key points:
- Video appears to show corrosion on a Rex aeroplane on a flight from Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
- Rex says it was "muck" on a piece of metal on an engine
- CASA is conducting an investigation at the airline's Wagga Wagga maintenance base
The clip emerged during an investigation into the airline by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), in response to concerns about its safety culture raised by the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA).
As part of its investigation, CASA audited the airline's maintenance base at Wagga Wagga yesterday.
Rex deputy chairman John Sharp said the video did not prove anything was wrong.

"What you see in there, it's claimed as corrosion, was actually wiped off yesterday," Mr Sharp told ABC Radio.
"It was wiped off. It was wiped off using a solvent.
"It's just what I would call some muck that builds up on a piece of metal in an engine."
In an article published this morning, the Daily Telegraph claimed the video showed rust on a Rex aeroplane flying from Kangaroo Island to Adelaide yesterday.
The VH-RXN aircraft shown in the video last flew between Kingscote and Adelaide on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Flighradar24 website.
CASA investigation at maintenance base
CASA sent staff to its Wagga Wagga heavy maintenance base yesterday to randomly survey five engineers to see if they agreed with the feelings of what Rex called a "disgruntled engineer" who complained to the union.
CASA corporate communications manager Peter Gibson said CASA staff carried out a safety audit on Rex yesterday.

"Making sure that the safety practices and culture within the Rex maintenance base were within a very high standard, any evidence that procedures are not being followed properly, that maintenance documentation's not being done adequately, so it was a quite [an] intensive process," he said.
"… So we're now getting to the point we've got a fair bit of information to work with, but obviously we've got this video as well.
"We need to look at that very carefully, analyse what that means and get to the bottom of this in terms of are there issues here that needs to be addressed and how are we going to make sure Rex addresses those?" he said.
Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly said he was not concerned about the footage.
"Rust on aeroplanes or damage to aeroplanes is not uncommon, it's a question of where the rust is, is it on the skin or is it in the frame?" he said.
"But I'd jump on a Rex aircraft and fly anywhere tomorrow, quite frankly.
"I've found them to be a superb airline, particularly in regional South Australia."
Union complaint to CASA about safety
The ALAEA sent a 33-page letter of complaint to CASA in May.
"It [relation] to our observations and concerns about what we considered to be the safety culture and non-compliance of Rex with their mandatory safety procedures in relation to maintenance related investigations," the union said in a statement.
"The letter in part identifies eight examples we consider to be serious non-compliance which involves several former and current employees over several years."

Rex said the rate of reporting defects in the past two years had increased by more than 10 per cent and a low turnover of maintenance staff suggested a good workplace culture.
Mr Sharp said the engineer had engaged the union to write to CASA "was taken to task for several instances of professional negligence and misconduct".
"In retaliation, he has made the unfounded claim that engineers are being intimidated out of reporting defects," Mr Sharp said.
"CASA's visit is to find out directly from our engineers if there is any merit to these claims."
In 2017, Rex grounded six its aircraft after one lost a propeller during a flight from Albury to Sydney.
The plane was forced to make an emergency landing after losing one of its propellers mid-air.
