Peter Dutton warns Alek Sigley against returning to North Korea

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has warned Alek Sigley against returning to North Korea following the student's release from detention.

Swedish officials helped facilitate the 29-year-old Perth student's release from North Korea more than a week after he had disappeared.

Mr Sigley immediately flew to China, before reuniting with his wife in Japan.

"I would stay in Japan, I would go back to South Korea, I would come back to Australia. All of those will have to be better options before he returns to North Korea," Mr Dutton told Channel Nine.

"We have advisories out to that effect warning people. It needs to be an application of common sense here.

"I don't think he will put himself back into that situation."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Mr Sigley's release during Question Time at Parliament House on Thursday.

Mr Morrison and Mr Dutton talked discreetly and read from the Prime Minister's phone before announcing the release.

The Government's official advice about travel to North Korea is that there is a "high level of risk" and potential travellers should reconsider their need to visit the country.

It specifically warns that "foreign visitors have been subject to arbitrary arrest and long-term detention".

Swedish diplomats met with North Korean officials on Wednesday to discuss Mr Sigley's disappearance on behalf of the Australian Government.

He was then released on Thursday morning and a Swedish Government envoy accompanied him to China.

"I'm fine. I'm very good," Mr Sigley told reporters as he arrived in Beijing.

He then flew on to Japan, where he again declined to speak to the media as he walked through Tokyo's Haneda airport just after 10:00pm.

Australia's consul general escorted Mr Sigley through immigration and they left from a special exit.

The 29-year-old, who was believed to be the only Australian living in North Korea, began studying for a master's degree in Korean literature at Kim Il-sung University in Pyongyang last year.

He is the founder of Tongil Tours, an Australian-based company specialising in guided tours to North Korea since 2013.

Mr Sigley married his Japanese wife Yuka Morinaga in a ceremony in Pyongyang last year.
