  • Ian Connett was at the Shinnecock Yacht Club preparing for a boat race, when he spotted the shark and snapped a photo of it

Police on Long Island have warned those enjoying the waters on this hot weekend to be wary of a large shark that was in shallow waters in the area. 

The Quogue Police Department said that the shark was seen near Penniman Creek at approximately 9am on Saturday. 

The creek provides access to the Shinnecook Bay and the Quogue Canal, Pix 11 reports. 

While it is unknown what species of shark the large beast is, authorities did indicate that it is approximately 10 to 12 feet long.

Police said that they are working with the Southampton Town Bay Constables to monitor the shark's whereabouts. 

Marine vessels are also being used to track the fish. 

Southampton Town Police are also said to be monitoring the shark in an aircraft. 

Officials are asking swimmers and boaters to be wary of the waters as they work to monitor the shark. 

Quogue Police Lt. Daniel Hartman explained to the New York Post that the department has struggled keeping tabs on the shark. 

'They essentially lost sign of it, and we don't know where it is now,' Hartman said.
