An autistic high school student with an extreme sensitivity to noise has received a silent standing ovation from his peers at their graduation ceremony.
Video of the emotional moment has gone viral on the internet, with viewers praising the students from New York's Carmel High School for their empathetic treatment of classmate Jack Higgins.
In the clip, filmed on June 20, Higgins can be seen preempting loud cheers and commotion by blocking his ears with his fingers as he is called up to the stage.
But his fears are soon allayed, as his respectful peers stand in silence for the much-loved graduate.

Prior to Higgins being presented with his diploma, Carmel High's prinicpal, Lou Riolo, can be heard requesting that the auditorium hold their applause.
'I would like everyone to not clap and not cheer,' he states in the video.
And while Riolo may have been expecting his students to follow his request, he certainly didn't expect them to perform a standing ovation for Higgins.
In a heartwarming scene, Higgins is escorted by his brothers to the stage as members of the 2019 graduating class slowly stand in silence to pay their respects.
'The students were amazing,' Riolo later told CNN.
'They are a class act and superseded expectations. For example them rising to their feet after Jack received his diploma was them. It was not preplanned and no one told them to act like that that. They felt compelled to show their support in that way. They made that amazing compassionate gesture on their own.'

He added: 'You often have to give people the opportunity to rise to an occasion. I truly believe people have a kind, compassionate soul and they want to help and this was one of those occasions'.
Delighted viewers have left comments on the video, which is doing the rounds on YouTube.
One wrote: 'As the parent of an autistic child , this makes me cry . Such a great group of kids . Congratulations to the class of 2019.'
Another gushed: 'I kept telling myself that I wasn't going to cry....but when his class stood...the flood gates opened. Congrats Jack and Carmel High Class of 2019.This is the America that I know and love.'
