Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's stunt double of nearly 20 years has revealed their exercises routines, diets and the favorite unhealthy snacks they both indulge in.

Tanoai Reed, 45, from Hawaii, first graced the screens as a stand-in during the film 'The Scorpion King' and since then has battled through blood, sweat and muscles tears on behalf of the leading man.

Reed who stands at 6ft 3 and weighs 260lb, according to his IMDB page, has featured in everything from the Fast & Furious series to Hercules.

For each role, to ensure their physical appearances match, they follow the same exercise routines five days a week and diet accordingly.

Over the years a tight relationship formed between Johnson and Reed, according to GQ, and they regularly exchange recommendations on their favorite cheat food donuts and pizza.

Johnson was the world's highest paid actor in the world earning $124 million last year and ranked number 15 overall on Forbes' celebrity earners list.

Reed praised his friend while speaking to GQ: 'Everything he does is from the heart, and I couldn’t have asked for a better boss and partner.

'It’s rare that an actor appreciates or even acknowledges their stunt double. It’s all about their ego, but with Dwayne, he doesn’t really have one.

'I’ve been doing it for 25 years and I still have these moments where I pinch myself and think, I can’t believe I’m getting paid to do this. It’s exhilarating for sure.'

Reed explained that over the years while acting as a stand-in for Johnson, he's broken a shin, an ankle, fractured a rib, sprained muscles and more.

After one muscle tear he couldn't run or jump for two months, he told the site.

During a fight with Jason Statham's stunt double in Fast and Furious 7,  a big piece of glass tore open his arm.

Reed told GQ: 'I had to have emergency surgery for that one because there was shrapnel in my arm. I’ve definitely beaten myself up over the years.

'Yeah, that one was pretty scary. The ER doctor opened up the bandage and blood was squirting out.

'He said he couldn’t fix it, so they had to call a specialist in to do surgery.

'It was like a shark bite, basically. I was in a full cast from my elbow to my fingertips for three months. But it’s all good now, other than a huge scar.'

In between films, Reed recommends taking long periods without exercising specific areas in order to let muscles and other injuries heal.

He keeps his physique in check with stretching and yoga to ensure the muscles remain loose.

Johnson and Reed have to perform mirrored training sessions to ensure their bodies match.

Dependent on how many topless scenes are needed they will alter the regime.

Each routine changes every couple of months, he told the site, and for every sessions they spend up to 1 hour 30 minutes training one specific body part.

'You’re not going to get more results from staying in the gym,' Reed told the site.

'You’ve got to work out the muscles, then rest and recuperate. That’s when you make your gains, is the rest time.'

Specifically for Johnson's 2014 film Hercules Reed and Johnson needed to be in 'ripped shape,' which they both spent between four and five months preparing for.

Other roles can be a little less demanding, he added.

'Jungle Cruise was a period piece and he had these baggy pirate shirts and pants,' Reed said. 'No one was seeing a lot of the physique so I was able to cheat with my diet a little bit.

'But then there are movies where you’re in tight spandex shirts and everything shows, so you’ve got to dial in.'

Johnson has a chef preparing his meals for a new role, 'weighing out to the ounce,' counting his macros and ensuring he eats every two hours.

Meanwhile Reed who does not have access to the same facilities, often uses 16-hour intermittent fasting, where he will only eat for eight hours of the day.

He also revealed that while they work hard they play hard too, with both of them sharing a strong passion for their two favorite unhealthy snacks.

Reed said: 'Dwayne and I share a love for donuts. He’ll actually get donuts from certain places and send them to me, or bring a box to set from somewhere else.

'Pizza too. We’ll always share our newfound pizza and donut spots with each other.'

But food and work isn't all they have in common. Over the years a strong bond has continued to grow.

Johnson even bought his stand-in a new truck to thank him for his friendship and many years of service in 2018.

'When I saw him I was like "Oh my god, he looks like my twin," the truth is he's been an incredible partner and brother to me,' Johnson said.

In the touching clip, Reed was left speechless and broke down in tears as Johnson unveiled the car.

'It's been an honor and I want to say from the bottom of my heart I love you and thank you, and enjoy your new truck.'

Reed says the thrill of the job and 'fear' keeps him taking on the beatings, torn muscles and broken bones.

'Fear is what keeps us alive,' Reed said. 'People think we’re daredevils, but daredevils hype up one big stunt and do it one time.

'Stunt men and women have to do it over and over and over again.

'You have to prepare to psychologically get into that zone, get back up, and do it again.'
