AFL commentators have been left bewildered by footage of a security guard briefly stepping onto the field during an AFL match in an attempt to separate two tussling players.

In Saturday's match between North Melbourne and the GWS Giants at Bellerive Oval in Hobart, the security guard made to separate Kangeroos player Jack Ziebell and Giant Heath Shaw, who were wrestling close to the boundary line.
The security guard hastened from his position on the fence to intercede, only for umpire Nathan Williamson to send him away.
"Hey, no, it's alright, you can't come on here," Williamson said in audio picked up by his microphone.
The AFL's crackdown on security has left many supporters venting their frustrations in the stands over the past week, with AFL chief executive Gillion McLachlan forced to apologise.
However not even the most ardent of critics would have suspected crackdown by security would extend to the field of play.
Pundits stunned by 'ridiculous' scene
The footage was aired on Fox Sports' On the Couch show on Monday night, leading to a stunned reaction from the former players who make up the four-person panel.
Triple Premiership winning player Jonathan Brown was scathing in his comments.
"It's unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it before … That is absolutely ridiculous," he said.
Host Gerard Healy suggested a lack of direction from head office was partly to blame for the incident.
"You had a bloody security guard about to come on the ground to separate two players," Healy said.
"This is the problem if you don't address it, if the leadership is allowed to be handballed over to [Docklands] stadium, you don't know what the outcome is going to be."
The former Melbourne and Sydney great added that if extra security was required, those providing it needed to be well trained.
"I think most people like the fact that they can ring a number and know if they're intimidated, somebody can come and address that," Healy said.
"But you've got to make sure you've got people well trained.
"If you put your faith in people that have got no training or little training, this is the sort of disaster that may well have happened only 24 hours ago."
Former Melbourne forward and Tasmanian native Gary Lyon said the vision was "laughable".
"That is beyond the pale," Lyon said.
"[The security guards] are supposedly behavioural experts, they're not football experts."
"That fella has just made the worst decision … That's so laughable that you can't defend it, but … they are supposed to be trained in crowd control."
"Not player control though," Brown added.
