Police on Long Island say that a volunteer firefighter set fire to a home last month.

Authorities in Suffolk County have charged John Kovalsky, 24, of Brentwood with third degree arson.

Surveillance video footage from a neighbor which was obtained by WCBS-TV shows a man pull up to a home in Brentwood on May 13.

The man is seen in the video approaching the home on 152 Sherman Street.

The home belonged to a family of three boys whose father died two months ago, according to WCBS-TV.

Fortunately, the home was empty at the time of the fire.

Two unidentified men who drove by as the blaze was raging honked their horns to wake up neighbors.

Neighbors said that two unidentified men honked their horns and alerted neighbors to the fire, which may have saved lives as the fire was in danger of spreading

Officials at the department told WCBS-TV that they take the charges seriously and are cooperating with law enforcement.

The unidentified men who alerted the neighborhood have not been acknowledged for their good dead, and locals are reaching out to try and learn their identities in order to thank them.

‘They’re truly our heroes,’ said nearby resident Michelle Beecher.
