Federal probe into Boeing 737 Max crashes expands to include 787 Dreamliner

Federal prosecutors now begin a probe into the Boeing 787 Dreamliner as part of their ongoing investigation into the deadly 737 MAX crashes

  • Federal prosecutors subpoenaed records related to production of the 787
  • The DOJ is also investigating two deadly crashes of the Boeing 737 Max
  • It is not immediately clear if the new subpoena is related to the 737 probe

The Department of Justice's probe into the troubled Boeing 737 Max has expanded to include the popular 787 Dreamliner.

Federal prosecutors have subpoenaed records from Boeing relating to the production of the 787 in South Carolina, the Seattle Times reported on Friday, citing two sources familiar with the investigation.

It said the subpoena was issued by the U.S. Department of Justice, which is also conducting a criminal investigation into the certification and design of Boeing's 737 Max after two deadly crashes within five months.

However, the newspaper said it was not clear if the subpoena was issued by the same prosecutors overseeing the 737 Max investigation.

The 737 Max has been grounded since mid-March after two crashes that killed 346 people. Preliminary accident reports pointed to software that erroneously pointed the planes' noses down and overpowered pilots' efforts to regain control.

Boeing says it expects to finish work on updated flight-control software for the 737 Max in September, a sign that the troubled jet likely won't be flying until late this year.

The latest delay in fixing the Max came a day after the disclosure that government test pilots found a new technology flaw in the plane during a test on a flight simulator.

A Boeing official said Thursday that the company expects to submit the software update to the Federal Aviation Administration for approval 'in the September timeframe.' The official spoke on condition of anonymity because Boeing has not publicly discussed timing of the update.

Once Boeing submits its changes, the FAA is expected to take several weeks to analyze them, and airlines would need additional time to take their grounded Max jets out of storage and prepare them to fly again.

Airlines were already lowering expectations for a quick return of the plane, which has been grounded since mid-March.
