The Duchess of Sussex planned to create her own charitable foundation focusing on women and girls before she met Prince Harry, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

The idea for a charitable venture was shelved when Meghan moved to Britain – but aspects may be revived following last week’s announcement that she and Harry are leaving the Royal Foundation, established with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a decade ago.

Meghan has previously worked with various women’s organisations and became the UN’s Advocate for Women’s Political Participation and Leadership in 2015. ‘She is somebody who has been involved with women’s causes since she was young,’ said a friend who revealed Meghan’s former ambition.

‘This isn’t new, it’s something that has always driven her, from long before she met Harry.’

Sources believe the couple’s new foundation is likely to involve causes such as female education and sexual violence and, like the Royal Foundation, have a US wing.

Palace aides have sought to play down suggestions that a rift between the two couples led to the Royal Foundation splitting.

One said: ‘These changes are designed to best complement the work and responsibilities’ of the two couples ‘as they prepare for their future roles and to better align their charitable activity with their new households.’

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge set for major tour of Asia 

THE Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Asia this autumn for a major official tour.

It is understood the trip will focus on Commonwealth countries, meaning destinations might include Bangladesh, India, Malaysia and Singapore.

Sources believe there is a good chance of a visit to Sri Lanka, where a terror attack on Easter Sunday left at least 258 people dead, but less likelihood of a stop in Brunei, which has attracted criticism for its human rights record. It is believed China was considered but was ruled out.

Fuller details of the tour, which will be weeks apart from a visit by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Africa, will be announced in the coming weeks. Kensington Palace declined to comment.
