D.C. STATEHOOD

McConnell seems to call the

prospect of D.C. statehood

‘full-bore socialism’

D.C. statehood advocates can forget about achieving their No. 1 goal as long as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) holds power, the senator confirmed in a Fox News interview.
McConnell told Laura Ingraham that the growing support in the Democratic-majority U.S. House of Representatives for making the District of Columbia the 51st state would stall in his chamber. No chance for Puerto Rico, either.
“They plan to make the District of Columbia a state — that would give them two new Democratic senators — Puerto Rico a state, that would give them two more new Democratic senators, and as a former Supreme Court clerk yourself, you’ve surely noticed that they plan to expand the Supreme Court,” McConnell said in the interview last week , which drew increasing attention on social media in recent days.
He spoke as House Democrats are moving forward with plans to hold a hearing — and perhaps a floor vote — on D.C. statehood for the first time in decades. Pro-statehood activists have said they are delighted by the enthusiastic support of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) but never expected to make much progress in the GOP-controlled Senate.
In the interview, McConnell seemed to lump D.C. statehood in with what he called Democrats’ “socialist” agenda.
“This is full-bore socialism on the march in the House,” he said. “And yeah, as long as I’m the majority leader of the Senate, none of that stuff is going anywhere.”
But Tuesday evening, an aide to the majority leader said McConnell sees statehood not as socialist, but as another example of government overreach on the part of Democrats, akin to the Green New Deal and Medicare-for-all.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), the District’s nonvoting delegate and one of the biggest cheerleaders for statehood, declined through a spokesman to comment. A spokeswoman for D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D), another top statehood advocate, said the mayor is as committed as ever to the cause.
“D.C. statehood is the civil rights issue of our time and embodies our nation’s founding democratic principle: the right to vote,” spokeswoman LaToya Foster said. “Our 700,000 residents, who pay taxes, fight in war, and have all the other obligations of citizenship, deserve and have earned representation in the House and Senate.”
Congress will hold a hearing on D.C. statehood July 24 — the first in a quarter-century.
NOTE:  As a former D.C. resident of 40 years, you can call the residents calls for statehood many things, but "socialism," full bore or otherwise, is not one of them.  You could call it unconstitutional, which at the moment it is.  You could call it Democratic overreach.  You could call it  a fever dream.  But not socialism unless we (McConnell, in this case) have redefined socialism to mean anything that we don't like.  Shortly, I suspect, we're going to have two year olds crying "Full-bore Socialism" when presented with broccoli on their dinner plates.

Of course McConnell objects.  No question it would put two more Democratic Senators in the Senate.  When Congress finally allowed D.C. to receive what is called "statehood" but isn't really, seats on the the City Council were mandated for Republicans since if not, every single seat would go to Democrats.  But D.C.'s 700,00 + residents are more numerous than two states, Wyoming (577,700) and Vermont (626,000) each of which do have two senators each sitting in the U.S. Senate.

Statehood for D.C. would require an amendment to the Constitution, which at the moment, is about as likely as Trump acting like a real President.  Congress, particularly the House District Committee, will continue to meddle in D.C.'s affairs - gun control legislation, funding for abortions, voter referenda, and a host of other local laws and regulations - since the prospects for such an amendment is nil since 2/3's of the states would have to vote approval of such an amendment.

So, D.C. residents will continue to dutifully pay their Federal income taxes without receiving the full benefits that other states receive from this privilege and having to put up with such nonsense as the Senate Majority leader calling D.C. statehood "full-bore socialism."

Have A Good Day
