Gary Ablett handed one-game suspension over punch

Dual Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett is again facing the first suspension of his stellar career, after being handed a one-match ban for striking Gold Coast's Anthony Miles in the jaw.

Key points:

  • Geelong star Gary Ablett has been handed a one-match ban for punching Gold Coast's Anthony Miles
  • For the third time in four matches, Ablett was imvolved in an incident assessed by the match review panel
  • In round seven Ablett was suspended for a high bump on Essendon's Dylan Shiel, but he successfully challenged the ban which was reduced to a fine

The Geelong star hit Miles during a scuffle behind play in Saturday night's game against his old club at Carrara, and match review officer Michael Christian assessed the incident as intentional high contact with low impact.

Ablett has never been suspended in his 16 years in the AFL, but he has made repeat appearances in Christian's post-round review in recent weeks.

Three weeks ago, the Cats' number four was suspended for a high bump on Essendon's Dylan Shiel.

He had been deemed to have hit Shiel intentionally with low impact to the head.

However he successfully challenged the ruling at the tribunal, which found his action was careless, low impact and high contact — this resulted in a $2,000 fine.

This allowed him to play against North Melbourne a fortnight ago, but he was again in question over a similar high hit on the Kangaroos' Sam Wright in Geelong's 24-point win at Docklands.

However Christian formed the view that while it was an intentional striking action, there was insufficient force used for a reportable offence.

This time, however, the match review officer came down against Ablett's action, although he said he did not take Ablett's previous incidents into account.

"I look at the incident in isolation," Christian told reporters on Monday afternoon.

"The role of the match review is to look at the guidelines and apply those guidelines.

"In this case we feel this is an appropriate penalty".

Christian said he had seen "a bit of pushing and shoving" but no reportable offences in the seconds before the incident.

"Then we saw Gary with the right fist connect to Anthony's (Miles) left side of his jaw, [his) upper neck and jaw," he said.

Ablett and Geelong will now have until Tuesday morning to decide whether to challenge the decision at the tribunal or to accept the penalty.

Geelong is due to face the Sydney Swans at Kardinia Park in Saturday's twilight match.
