Aussie World Cup cricket squad 'fear' letting down Langer and Ponting: Cowan

On the field, Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting were supremely talented cricketers, as well as formidable opponents.
Key Points:
- Former Test cricketer, Ed Cowan, says Australia's players will fear letting down their coaches, Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting
- Australia is aiming for a record sixth World Cup title
- Cowan expects Smith to make a significant contribution with the bat during this year's tournament
Both highly respected and never ones to take a backward step, the duo now loom as a key component in Australia's upcoming World Cup campaign, starting this weekend against Afghanistan.
Former Test opening batsman Ed Cowan said whilst much has been made of Australia's on-field leadership, the team's true figureheads are calling the shots from the dressing room.
"The leadership now is strong with Langer and Ponting — they're not going to stand for anything that they don't deeply believe in," Cowan told ABC Grandstand's World Cup Special podcast.
"Anyone who steps outside those parameters is going to be dealt with."
Langer is the head coach with Ponting to serve as one of his deputies, while Aaron Finch will skipper Australia as it aims for a record sixth World Cup title.

Cowan acknowledged that Finch has put his own stamp on the side "culturally", but said the players were aware that this side effectively belongs to two of the game's greats.
"Both Langer and Ponting are these spiritual leaders of Australian cricket — they were when they played — and I think they still are," Cowan said.
"They're revered by the players and I think there's some fear around that from the players — in a good way — that you don't want to upset those two because their disappointment, it's almost like that fatherly disappointment.
"To let those two down is something that you don't want to have to bear."
Shot at redemption
Two players who hope to overcome the disappointments of the last 12 months are the former captain and vice-captain, Steve Smith and David Warner.

The duo will take to the field without any formal leadership role — a by-product of their one-year ban for their role in the Cape Town cheating scandal — and Cowan said their adjustment back into the Australian set-up remains a work in progress.
"There will be some tension behind the scenes but all good teams have tension behind the scenes," he said.
"I don't think that's unique and I think it'll take some time for them to really function as a cog in the wheel."
Bat to dominate ball
While many predict a high-scoring tournament with the bat to dominate the ball, the likes of Warner and Smith are poised to play a key role for the Australians.
Smith's last one-day international appearance for Australia was in January 2018, but Cowan said the former skipper is mentally and physically ready to make his mark in this year's tournament.
"I think he's a man who feels as though he's done his penance and to give back to the game is to be scoring runs," Cowan said.
He's not a complicated character and I feel as though he will be desperate to make amends with the bat — and he's the kind of player that can."
