Some experts are warning that the worst could be yet to come as different allergens overlap.

'In April in North Carolina we have an overlap for a couple weeks where we have pretty high counts of tree and then grass also gets started,' Dr Heather Gutekunst with Allergy Partners of Raleigh told ABC11.

'So when we see that, if you are allergic to both, we tend to see an escalation in symptoms.'

University of North Carolina's Dr David Peden warned that this year's pollen season will be more brutal than in years past and will also likely last longer than usual.

Peden told WVLT that an extra 10 to 20 percent of the population will suffer from allergies in the coming decades, hinting at the issue of climate change.
