The home has also been reinforced with steel beams, no doubt important in the earthquake-prone Bay Area, and the exterior's original stucco was replaced as well.

'The level of quality employed here is extraordinary,' said real estate agent Ludovico Mazzola. 'The home was preserved and updated and wasn't hacked to look like a modern monster.'

Mazzola said the home is a perfect example on how to preserve iconic San Francisco buildings.

'So many of these homes come on and they're not fully redone and they have only a few renovated rooms,' he said.

'The idea was to do a major overhaul as these homes deserve. They're icons of San Francisco, and often they're dilapidated.'

William Getty, the grandson of billionaire industrialist J. Paul Getty, purchased the home with his socialite wife Vanessa for $11.5million in 2002.
