  • The smartphone app will indicate whether any fees need to be paid
  • Easyjet introduced a bag scanning feature on its app earlier this year
  • Ryanair's baggage policy often comes under fire for being too confusing

Ryanair has launched a new bag sizing tool that allows passengers to check if their luggage is small enough for the cabin - before they even leave home.

The Dublin-based no-frills airline has introduced the feature on its mobile app, which allows passengers to scan their bags using their phone's camera.

Using the scan, the tool then tells passengers if their bag will fit under the seat, or will need to go in an overhead bin or be checked into the hold.

Ryanair has launched a new bag sizing tool that allows passengers to check if their luggage is small enough for the cabin - before they even leave home

The technology works by placing a bag on a flat surface and pointing the phone's camera at the piece of luggage.

Holding down the 'scan' button, passengers must move their phone around the bag taking in the front, back, sides and top.

The app works out the bag's dimensions using mapping software.

It then indicates whether any fees will need to be paid.

Ryanair's baggage policy often comes under fire for being too confusing

Earlier this year, easyJet became the first airline in the UK to offer a bag sizing feature on its phone app.

Speaking at the time, easyJet said that if used correctly, passengers won't be faced with any additional charges at the gate for bringing an oversized cabin bag.

Ryanair's baggage policy often comes under fire for being too confusing.

In February Ryanair was hit with a €3million (£2.6million) fine over its 'misleading' cabin baggage policy.

The low-cost airline was slapped with the penalty by Italy's antitrust authority in relation to its new cabin baggage rules, introduced late last year.

However, the fine was later suspended in lieu of a definitive ruling on the issue.
