Millions of believers around the world celebrated Orthodox Easter in a number of religious ceremonies.

From continent to continent, millions of people celebrated by holding traditions including releasing fire lanterns, eating Easter cake and holding processions to mark the holy occasion.  

In Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, revellers tucked in to an Easter cake weighing in at 350kg, while almost 1,000km away in Volgograd a procession was held to mark the day. 

In the Donetsk region of Ukraine, special cakes were baked and taken to church. But an even bigger cake which measures five metres in diameter was baked in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

The huge cake was baked for both today's Orthodox Easter celebrations and the Guinness World Records Book, but it is is not known if a record has been broken.

Most Christians celebrated Easter last week on the Gregorian calendar. However, Orthodox Easter is celebrated relative to its position on the Julian calendar, which can change from one year to another. 

In Jerusalem's Old City, hundreds watched a procession to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the alleged spot where Jesus was crucified and resurrected. 

Fire lanterns were released in the town of Leonidio, Greece, while people brought their decorated Easter baskets to church in Istanbul, Turkey.

Even in the Kurdish-controlled city of Qamishli, Syria, along with the capital Damascus, believers came together in a traditional Orthodox Easter church service.
