'1950 rang and wants its rule book back': Norwegian Air is blasted over 22-page dress code that forces stewardesses to wear high heels and makeup
- The women have to wear either light foundation, cream with colour or powder
- They are permitted to wear false eyelashes as long as they don't 'look strange'
- Men are only allowed to wear makeup if it is to cover up bruises or acne
- Anette Trettebergstuen, a member of the Labour Party's women's federation, criticised the rule book
Budget airline Norwegian Air has been criticised after it emerged that its female flight attendants are forced to wear high heels, with the only exception being if they have a doctor's note and bring it in every day.
Despite the fact that Norway is said to be one of the most gender-equal countries in the world, the airline has employed a strict 22-page dress code which includes heeled shoes and makeup.
A member of Norway's Socialist Left Party, Ingrid Hodnebo said the rules were 'almost comical', while Anette Trettebergstuen, a member of the Labour Party's women's federation, said: 'The year 1950 rang and it wants its rulebook back.'
Make up options for the women include light foundation, cream with colour or powder. This is while false eyelashes are allowed unless they 'look strange'.

However, men faced restrictions on the use of cosmetics and were only allowed to wear makeup if it was to cover acne or bruises.
Further requirements for male attendants are that they must have trimmed unpainted nails, hair that does not go over the shirt collar, and no earrings.
The Times reported that the airline believes it is being singled out and has claimed that its policy is the same as most global airlines, including British Airways.
It also says that guidelines were created with 'input from our pilot and cabin crew colleagues and have been well received'.
A spokesman said: 'Norwegian has a comprehensive set of uniform guidelines to ensure that our flying crew represent our brand in a smart and consistent manner.'
Just last month, Richard Branson's Virgin Airlines announced that women would no longer be required to wear makeup and were permitted to wear trousers.
Other airlines such as Air Lingus soon followed suit.

This is while budget airlines such as RyanAir and Easyjet employ more relaxed regulations, with British Airways also having stopped enforcing the wearing of skirts in 2016.
In 2018 Norway rated second in the world for progress towards gender equality in the Global Gender Gap Report, beaten only by Iceland.
In a statement to MailOnline Norwegian Air said: 'Like all global airlines, Norwegian has a comprehensive set of uniform guidelines to ensure that our flying crew represent our brand in a smart and consistent manner.
'The guidelines were drafted with input from our pilot and cabin crew colleagues and have been well received, sharing many gender commonalities in addition to some specific male and female requirements.'
