Footballer sent off by referee plunges match into darkness after switching off floodlights
Sent-off footballer plunges match into darkness when he turns off the stadium floodlights 'after mixing up the switches in the changing room'
- Julius Muraga was sent off during Kidlington Development's away fixture
- Cheltenham Saracens' ground was left in darkness after he flicked the switch
- He said he had been trying to turn on the showers and turn the wrong switch
- Game was held up five minutes towards the end as players couldn't see the ball
An aggrieved footballer who was sent off by the referee plunged the match into darkness when he switched off the floodlights.
Julius Muraga was trying to turn on the showers in the changing room when he made the blunder, which forced the referee to halt the game, as players were finding it impossible to spot the ball.
He denied he did it on purpose because he was in a sulk and claimed he had ‘accidentally’ turned the lights off, when he flicked the switch that controlled the showers.
It happened during his team Kidlington Development's away fixture at Cheltenham Saracens' ground.

Fans and players were plunged into darkness after he 'accidentally' turned the lights out
Cheltenham won the game by three goals to one to clinch a second place finish in Hellenic League Division One West.
However, the game was held up for around five minutes late on when Muraga was sent off and the lights went out seconds later.
He claimed that after entering the changing rooms, he 'inadvertently' turned off the DN Fire Stadium floodlights, 'thinking I was turning on the showers'.
The final was held up due to the lights going out as players were finding it impossible to find the ball
Once the lights went back on, he trudged into the showers - and his team mates went down to a 3-1 defeat.
All the goals had been scored before the ground was plunged into darkness, with Kai Mahon putting Saracens in front in the 26th minute.
Jimmy Deabill levelled for Kidlington in the 62nd minute, but after Muraga was dismissed, Ryan Smith (77th minute) and Sean McKeon (79) ensured Saracens picked up their 16th win in 22 games this season.
It has been a remarkable turnaround for the side, managed by Ryan Betteridge and Stuart Mitchinson...in the 2016/7 season they finished 14th out of 16, with a goal difference of minus 105.
Last season they ended in 10th spot, but with last night's victory they are now in contention for promotion along with champions Easington Sports.
