Technology behind self-driving cars has come a long way in the last several years, racing from the lab to real-life city streets, but for the artificially-intelligent vehicles, obstacles, in this case the all-too-common pothole, still abound. 

Tesla CEO and avid Twitter user, Elon Musk, said that his company is working to change that. 

In a reply to multiple tweets regarding test runs of Tesla's new and more automated autopilot feature, Musk seems to suggest that his company is working on a solution to help the company's vehicles steer clear of dangerous potholes.   

For artificially-intelligent vehicles, obstacles, in this case the all-too-common pothole, still abound. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that his company is working to change that

WHAT IS TESLA'S AUTOPILOT? 

 Tesla introduced Autopilot in 2014.

Autopilot is the software that powers the car's self-driving capabilities.

It supports lane centering, self-parking and the ability to automatically change lanes, among other things.

Autopilot relies on cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar.

These components allow the vehicle to 'see' its surroundings, picking up on things like obstacles and traffic lanes.

Data is sent to on-board computers that use machine learning to make judgments on what to do next.

 

Currently, drivers are required to seize control of the car in order to safely avoid road hazards, including potentially dangerous divots. 

Telsa has offered an autopilot feature since 2014 and has consistently worked to drive its systems towards full autonomy. 

Most recently, an update in April saw the introducing of what the company called a 'more seamless' lane-change system that does away with the requirement that users confirm a lane change change prior to the car's execution. 

Though the move marks a major advancement for Tesla's autopilot systems, the company's roll out of its new feature has been colored by a disconcerting new study from researchers who tricked the car into veering toward oncoming traffic.

To compound the apparent flaw, all the feat took was placing a few reflective stickers on the road which seemed to confuse the car's visual systems into thinking the lane diverts. 

In a response, Tesla said the demonstration by researchers did not constitute a real safety threat since the conditions were artificially manipulated.

'The [researchers] findings are all based on scenarios in which the physical environment around the vehicle is artificially altered to make the Autopilot system behave differently, which is not a realistic concern given that a driver can easily override Autopilot at any time by using the steering wheel or brakes and should always be prepared to do so,' a Tesla spokesperson told CNET's Roadshow.

Elon Musk took to Twitter to let some Tesla fans know that pesky potholes might not be a problem for the company's autopilot feature for much longer.

Tesla cars have been hacked to disturbing results including swerving into oncoming traffic and activating the cars' wipers.

The company has brushed off apparent hacks as non-threats as well, including an attack on the cars' windshield wipers that tricked the system into thinking the vehicle was experiencing inclement weather in addition to another now-patched vulnerability that allowed assailant to gain control and maneuver the Tesla using a game controller. 

While Tesla's autopilot features makes strides towards qualifications as a fully autonomous vehicle -- the latest generation still requires human intervention in a number of scenarios -- Musk has said that the company will deliver a completely self-driving car this year. 

For now, according to recent findings by MIT, even with the aid of a computer, 90 percent of drivers continue to view commuting as a hands-on experience.
