- Ocasio-Cortez insists she has no intentions of apologizing and took Barr’s letter as a sign that the GOP were afraid of her visiting the state
Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is making plans to visit Kentucky in the coming months, despite being formerly uninvited by one of the state’s congressional Republicans.
Despite the snub, AOC’s spokesperson’s Corbin Trent insists other politicians from Kentucky have asked the New York Rep. to stopover in the Bluegrass state – and it’s a request she’s going to oblige.
‘Luckily, we still have open borders with Kentucky, we are free to travel there,’ Trent said to CNN. ‘We hope to visit and have a town hall, listen to concerns of workers in Kentucky.’
An exact date hasn’t yet been set for the sure-to-be controversial outing, but the 29-year-old will be looking to square-off against fellow Representative Andy Barr once more, just as she did last month in a fiery House Financial Services Committee hearing.

Democratic representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is hedging plans to visit Kentucky, despite being uninvited last week
One of Kentucky's Congressional Representatives, Andy Barr (above), told AOC to apologize for showing a 'lack of civility' towards Dan Crenshaw, when she lambasted him online for scolding Ilhan Omar
Following AOC’s rousing speech that her Green New Deal was not an ‘elitist issue’ but a ‘quality of life issue’, Barr bit back at the proposal, insisting the ramifications of the scheme would leave thousands of his constituents penniless and without jobs.
‘I want to invite the gentlelady to come to eastern Kentucky where thousands of coal miners no longer have paychecks,’ he proposed. ‘I invite her to go underground with me and meet the men and women who do heroic work to power the American economy.’
But remarkably, AOC unflinchingly replied she’d be ‘happy to’, adding that her call for ‘fully funding the pensions of coal miners in West Virginia and throughout Appalachia because we want a just transition to make sure that we're investing in jobs across those swaths of the country.’
However, three weeks on, Barr seemed to rescind the offer last week following a spat between Ocasio-Cortez and Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw.
The pair became embattled in a war of words on social media after Crenshaw publicly criticized Ilhan Omar in relation to comments that she made last month about 9/11.
Crenshaw was the first high-profile Republican to decry Omar’s infamous ‘some people did something’ speech, calling it ‘unbelievable’ and a brazen attempt to underplay the tragedy.

The stern words spurred a conservative onslaught against Omar that had already been brewing for several weeks.
Jumping to her fellow freshman’s defense, AOC branded Crenshaw a hypocrite on Twitter for not co-sponsoring the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund and urged him to ‘do something’ about domestic terrorism.
‘You refuse to cosponsor the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund, yet have the audacity to drum resentment towards Ilhan w/completely out-of-context quotes,’ her tweet read.
‘In 2018, right-wing extremists were behind almost ALL US domestic terrorist killings. Why don’t you go do something about that?’
Crenshaw, a former Navy Seal who lost his eye fighting insurgents in Afghanistan, never replied to the message and later explained to Fox News that he thought it was ‘almost not worth responding to’.
However, in a letter, Barr ordered AOC to apologize to the veteran, accusing her of demonstrating a ‘lack of civility’ and urged her to withdraw her statement ‘prior to coming to visit Kentucky’.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to weigh in on the feud, but insisted AOC visiting Kentucky would be 'interesting'
Ocasio-Cortez insists she has no intentions of apologizing and took Barr’s letter as a sign that the GOP were afraid of her visiting the Republican-favored state.
‘GOP's getting scared that up close, their constituents will realize I'm fighting harder for their health care than their own Reps,’ AOC mused in a tweet.
She later added that she invited Barr to a town hall with MSNBC in New York, but Barr declined to watch University of Kentucky basketball game instead, she claimed.
When questioned about the stand-off during a news conference on Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to weigh in on the feud between AOC and Barr.
‘It's not up to me, I didn't issue such an invitation,’ he said. ‘[But] It will be interesting if she does, in fact, come.’
