Western Sydney airport to get seven-word name
Sydney's second airport has been named in honour of Nancy-Bird Walton, one of Australia's pioneer aviators and the founder of the Australian Women's Pilots' Association (AWPA).

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the new facility at Badgerys Creek, scheduled to open in 2026, would be officially known as Western Sydney International Nancy-Bird Walton Airport.
"I'm sure this hero of the Australian skies would be proud that the airport named in her honour will be providing much opportunity and enrichment to the workers and families of western Sydney," Mr Morrison said.
The Prime Minister described the unveiling as a "sky high moment".
"Australia's story is a tremendous one and its the story of so many amazing women in our country," he said.
"Nancy had a gift for leadership and bringing people together, she was utterly charming as I knew from first-hand experience when I met her on several occasions."
Born in 1915 on the mid-north coast of NSW, Ms Walton took flying lessons from Charles Kingsford Smith and obtained her class A flying licence when she just 17.
In 1935, she was the first woman in Australia, and the Commonwealth, to obtain her commercial pilot's licence, which she held onto until 2006.
She died in 2009.
When she was 35, Ms Bird Walton founded the AWPA and sat as its president until 1990.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian commended Mr Morrison for his "inspired choice" of name for the $5.3 billion western Sydney airport.
"Nancy was a trailblazer not just for women, but for anyone who thought about the future and who had a vision for helping others," Ms Berejiklian said.
The Badgerys Creek airport is not the first aviation site dedicated to Ms Bird Walton.
The terminal at Bourke Airport in north-west NSW where Ms Bird Walton had help set up remote air ambulance services is named after her.
Her 1990 autobiography, "My God! It's a Woman", was titled after the response of an grazier trapped on an outback property gave when he was informed the pilot flying to his rescue was Ms Bird Walton.
