UK man who tried to flee Australia on jet ski to be extradited to WA

A 57-year-old British man who allegedly tried to flee Australia across Torres Strait on a jet ski will be extradited to Western Australia, after rejecting his court-appointed lawyer in a Cairns court.
Key points:
- David James Jackson's request for legal help from the UK embassy was refused
- He refused help from a Legal Aid lawyer
- Mr Jackson made no application for bail and will be extradited to Perth
David James Jackson was arrested on Saibai Island, less than five kilometres from the Papua New Guinea mainland at the northern end of Torres Strait, after he launched a jet ski off the tip of Cape York allegedly armed with a crossbow.
Appearing in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday, Mr Jackson tried to fight his extradition, saying he had been denied his "rights to legal representation".
"I've got no legs to stand on," he said.
The court heard Mr Jackson refused help from the court-appointed Legal Aid lawyer.
"I only met him five minutes ago, how can he work out my case in five minutes?" Mr Jackson said.
"He was just interested in getting his face on TV."

Mr Jackson requested he be granted legal representation from the "British Embassy".
Magistrate Robert Spencer refused the application and told Mr Jackson the outstanding warrants in WA meant he needed to be extradited.
"You admitted you're the person on the warrant and you did not contest the validity of the warrant," Magistrate Spencer said.
Mr Jackson said he was unhappy with the ruling.
"I reckon what you're doing is illegal, I've got no rights," he said.
No application was made for bail.
Mr Jackson is due to appear in both the Perth Magistrates Court and the Perth District Court on April 1.
