Revelling in the "unfortunate mix-up" that saw a British Airways flight land in Edinburgh, Scotland instead of Dusseldorf, Germany has backfired for Irish airline Ryanair.
Key points:
- Ryanair mocked British Airways after a contracted flight landed in the wrong country
- Twitter users were quick to criticise the Irish airline, pointing out times Ryanair planes landed in the wrong airport
- Ryanair was given a 40 per cent customer satisfaction rating in an annual UK survey, while British Airways scored 56 per cent
The low-cost airline tagged its UK competitor in a photo of Geography for Dummies in a post on Twitter shortly after news of the flight's surprise stopover broke.
However, the attempt to poke fun at British Airways prompted a series of sarcastic and critical remarks from Twitter users.
One pointed out that a Ryanair flight bound for Thessaloniki, Greece, ended up landing in Timisoara, Romania due to heavy fog in January.
According to a report from The Independent, passengers were offered an 18-hour ride on "an old bus" to the Greek city.
Some took up the offer while 89 passengers refused the long journey.
Eventually, the Greek government sent an Aegean Airlines plane to Timisoara, with the displaced passengers arriving in Thessaloniki a full day later than planned.
But there were other instances of Ryanair flights landing at different airports.
Another user pointed to yet another unexpected airport visit from 2006.
The flight, operated by Eirjet on Ryanair's behalf, landed at a military airbase rather than the City of Derry airport due to pilot error.
In January, Ryanair was voted the worst short haul airline in the annual UK Which? survey for the sixth year in a row.
Ryanair scored a customer rating of 40 per cent, while British Airways scored 56 per cent.
Twitter users were quick to target the Irish airline for its unfavourable customer satisfaction reputation.
On Tuesday, British Airways said the flight landed in Edinburgh instead of Dusseldorf because the wrong flight plan was filed by WDL Aviation, which operated the flight on behalf of the airline.
Air traffic control officials received that same plan and saw nothing amiss, with the mistake only becoming apparent when passengers realised they'd landed in the wrong city.
WDL aviation said it was working with authorities to determine the cause of the "obviously unfortunate mix-up".
