A prize-winning show dog who disappeared in an Atlanta airport for three days has been reunited with its owners, officials say.

Gale, a 22-month-old Staffordshire terrier, was travelling home back to Amsterdam with her handlers on Saturday, after competing in a dog show in Louisville, Kentucky.

But when KLM Royal Dutch Airlines baggage handlers went to load her crate on to the plane they discovered it was empty.

Somehow, the crafty pooch had escaped the container and was running loose on the airfield of Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport - one of the busiest airports in the world.

Gale's handlers immediately called her owners back in Holland to tell them of the worrying discovery.

'Me and my wife completely panicked,' Gale's owner, Floris Van Essen, told ABC News. 'We were out of our minds. You can imagine it's horrific to hear that a dog is gone and nobody knows where she is.'

The Louisville dog show was set to be Gale's last before she retired from performing and returned home with the Van Essens full time.

'There's a sense of hopelessness and powerlessness because there's nothing you can do,' Van Essen added.

Sightings of the dog were fleeting over the course of the next two days, until a pilot spotted Gale on the airfield at 3:30 am on Monday morning.

With more than 4,600 acres of land to cover, authorities laid a series of traps - baiting them with food and treats - in a bid to safely capture the dog.

Airport spokesman Andy Gobeil said that Gale continued to avoid the traps and evade capture until Tuesday, when eventually the epic cat - or dog - and mouse chase came to an end.

Her handler had been calling out for her somewhere on the airfield when Gale suddenly appeared, bounded down the tarmac and leaped into his arms.

During her disappearance, the Van Essens described their beloved dog as 'friendly and loving', but admitted she is easily startled and skittish in new surroundings, which may explain her great-escape.

They thanked the airport staff for all their help in facilitating Gale's safe return.

The airport tweeted two pictures of Gale's and Van Essen's reunion on Tuesday, following her safe voyage home.

'All the people willing to help, the volunteers, everyone at the airport," Van Essen told CNN. 'It's been heartwarming.'
