Actor Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, in a $50 million defamation lawsuit over a piece she wrote for The Washington Post about domestic abuse.

The complaint, filed in the Circuit Court of Fairfax, Virginia, said that, while Depp was not named in the Post article, it was clear Heard was talking about him.
The lawsuit called her ongoing allegations of domestic abuse "categorically and demonstrably false".
"They were part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms Heard and advance her career," the lawsuit said, claiming that "she is the perpetrator".
The suit said Depp, 55, suffered financial losses because of the accusations, including being dropped from his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.
In her article, published in the Post in December, Heard also said she lost an acting role and contract with a major fashion brand because went public with her claims of abuse.
"I spoke up against sexual violence - and faced our culture's wrath," the 32-year-old actress wrote.
She added that she felt as though she was "on trial in the court of public opinion".
In a statement to People magazine, her attorney Eric M George called the lawsuit "frivolous".
He said the lawsuit was "just the latest of Johnny Depp's repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard".
Depp's attorney, Adam Waldman, told People, a US celebrity and human interest magazine, that he and his client looked forward to presenting "overwhelming video, photographic and eyewitness evidence" that would clear Depp's name.
Abuse allegations in lead-up to divorce
Heard first accused Depp of domestic violence in May 2016.
She filed for divorce a little more than a year after they were married, citing irreconcilable differences.
After Heard brought a photo of her with a bruised face to court, a judge ordered Depp to stay away from her.
She told the court Depp was "verbally and physically abusive" towards her throughout the duration of their relationship.
Heard and Depp privately settled their acrimonious divorce case in 2017, a day ahead of a court hearing on the status of a restraining order the actress had obtained against her estranged husband.
Heard was awarded $7 million in the divorce settlement, which she pledged to divide equally between the American Civil Liberties Union, specifically to prevent violence against women, and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
"As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money played no role for me personally and never has, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and, in doing so, hopefully help those less able to defend themselves," she said in a statement at the time.
The pair released a joint statement calling their relationship "intensely passionate and at times volatile but always bound by love".
"There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm," the statement read.
Trouble in Australia
The pair was embroiled in scandal back in 2015, after the couple's two Yorkshire terriers were smuggled into Australia on a private jet without being declared to quarantine.
At the time, Depp was filming an instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean on Queensland's Gold Coast.
Then Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce threatened to have the dogs put down, famously saying, "it's time that Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States".
The pair flew the dogs from Australia, with Heard later being handed a good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to falsifying quarantine documents.
They also appeared in a video apologising to the Department of Agriculture, voicing their support for Australian biosecurity.
