Half of Canada's 1.4 million Indigenous peoples live in urban areas, according to the 2011 census. Neil Forbes, an academic researcher at the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, is one of them.
Forbes, a Cree member of Saddle Lake First Nation in Alberta, has lived off-reserve his whole life. Since 2015, he has been interviewing other urban Indigenous people about their identity. During the same time, he got married and had a daughter, Lotty.
He said he started this project to gain a stronger understanding of where he belongs as an urban Indigenous man in Canada. But now it is no longer about him, he says: it's about his daughter and her connection to the community, and the stakes feel higher.
The first six episodes of "The Other: Urban Aboriginals in Canada" are available on iTunes and Spotify.
