Auckland threatens to axe Lime scooters over braking fault

Lime scooters has been issued an ultimatum: shape up or ship out.

Key points:

  • The company was forced to halt operations in Switzerland due to a similar braking fault
  • Auckland Transport said the company has until the end of the week to rectify the problems in New Zealand
  • In a statement, the company said affected scooters had been removed from circulation

The urgent warning from one of New Zealand's peak transport authorities comes in response to an apparent braking fault that is causing the electric scooter's wheels to lock up without notice.

Auckland authorities are now threatening to remove the dockless scooter-sharing scheme, which also operates in Queensland, if the technical fault is not addressed.

More than 1,200 injury claims for e-scooters, which include other ride sharing services, have been recorded by the NZ Accident Compensation Authority (ACC) since October last year.

"From the outset, I have had serious safety concerns," Auckland Transport chairman Lester Levy told RNZ.

"Initially about user behaviour, but recently we're seeing what could be equipment — either software or mechanical failure."

Earlier this month, the company conceded a glitch was causing an unknown number of its scooters to brake mid-ride, while it halted operations in Switzerland entirely in January due to similar problems with its fleet.

Lime scooters lined up along the footpath.

Mr Levy said New Zealand could not "let cool trump safety" and that the company had been advised it has until the end of the week to rectify the issue, or action will be taken.

"Their license is under review right at the moment," he said.

"When you have equipment failure, the burden of proof should be on the company."

In a statement to the ABC, Lime said while the issue was still under investigation, user safety was its "first priority" and affected scooters had been removed from circulation.

"In the meantime, we have proactively engaged regulators as we work to eliminate these incidents," a spokesperson said.

"We are in the process of continuing to develop early detection and additional preventative measures for our entire global fleet."

The company is yet to respond to questions over whether similar faults have been detected in its Australian fleet.

Lime scooters has attracted controversy since its launch in Brisbane in November, with reports of collisions on footpaths.

More than 20 scooters were confiscated by the Gold Coast City Council in December — less than a day after it launched its ride-share service in the city — following a stoush over local law.
