Moving to a different country throws up a number of culture shocks - as an internet thread has been revealing.

Scroll down for the most bizarre...
South Africa to USA
One Reddit user who moved from South Africa to the USA couldn't believe the variety of toothpaste on offer in stores (stock image)
A trip to a chemist to buy toothpaste provided South African '748point2' with their biggest culture shock.
They wrote on Reddit: 'There are so many more options for what basically boil down to the exact same thing.
'The one that really got me was the toothpaste - there was an entire freaking wall of variations on mint toothpaste. I had a panic attack the first time I went to a store by myself.'
Mexico to USA
One contributor was shocked at the lack of hugging in America (stock image)
For 'MorasEscritoras' a lack of physical touching is what shocked him most about his move from Mexico to the US.
He explained: 'In Mexican culture, it's normal to hug and air kiss classmates and co-workers, even people you're just meeting.
'After a while in the US, I got used to keeping a distance with everyone, not touching anyone, not sharing food, etc.
'Then I went back to work in Mexico for a few months and I remembered how normal it is for people to invade your personal space without any hesitation, or just touch you without consent. It threw me off.'
UK to New Zealand
One Reddit user, 'old_cat_spinster', picked out several differences between Brits and Kiwis.
But one stark difference she says is how people from New Zealand are 'super super chilled' but also 'really hardcore'.
One Brit who moved to New Zealand said that if Kiwis say something is a 'short hike' it is at least five hours
She explained: 'If they say it’s a hill - it’s a mountain. If they say it’s a short hike it’s at least five hours.'
South Africa to Australia
The weirdest thing about moving from South Africa to Australia for 'takentryanotheruser' was the 'adrenaline come down'.
He said: 'I realised, while going for a run in the mean streets of Sydney, that I didn’t need to worry about someone attacking me for my phone or running shoes.
'You don’t realise how crazy living in such a crime-ridden country is until you stop looking over your shoulder every two seconds.'
USA to Poland
For 'Ktryaatazan', an American living in Poland, opening hours of shops took a while to get used to.
She said: 'One of the biggest culture shocks for me was getting adjusted to all the religious holidays and things being closed (most) Sundays.
'The entire country basically shuts down on these days, I like to joke to my boyfriend that "Poland is closed today", but it's not far from the truth.
'I live in one of the major cities here and it can turn into a ghost town, depending on the holiday. I love going for walks on these days, it's very peaceful but sometimes it can almost feel like the opening scene of 28 Days Later.'
USA to Brazil
In Brazil, American 'NorthEazy' was confused by everyone offering food to share in restaurants
When 'NorthEazy' moved from the US to Brazil, he was shocked by the sharing culture in restaurants.
He said: 'No matter where you were, home, restaurant, boteco (short-order dinette), if someone at your table ordered food, they’d offer it to you.
'I never accepted as I thought it was just a gesture but they’d always offer you a bite.'
UK to Germany
For The_Real_SF, the biggest culture shock from the UK to Germany manifested itself at a local leisure centre.
He said: 'The biggest shocks were naked saunas and spas. A welcome surprise but Brits don't do naked. Especially in groups.
'But swimming naked in a pool of people is quite liberating.'
USA to South Korea
Reddit user 'preworkoutandsteak made the big move from the U.S. to South Korea and immediately noticed a difference on the roads.
He said: There's no billboards. Anywhere. There's a severe lack of advertisement for anything except for the random trucks that drive down the road blasting announcements for grand openings on occasion.
'And all of the stray cats. There are so many cats.'
America to Japan
When dining in restaurants, 'Devenu 917' saw a huge difference in how waiting staff work.
She explained: 'When you need service at a restaurant you shout "excuse me!" in a fairly loud voice and somebody will come to you. I'm so used to being quiet and waiting around in America.
'I still can't do it because I feel like an a**hole demanding somebody come help me. Waitstaff generally come to me and check what's up because I probably look helpless. I would likely starve if they didn't.'
According to 'KingCarnivore', in Russia the streets aren't gritted as locals don't like it ruining their shoes
USA to Finland
When 'habi12' moved from the US to Finland, she was mostly shocked by how people behave in cold weather.
She said: 'People lose things like gloves or hats on the sidewalk and strangers pick them up and put them nearby on a bush or sign so they will be seen.
'People turn in wallets with cash still inside them.'
USA to Russia
For 'KingCarnivore' moving from the US to Russia proved that nothing stops in the dead of winter there.
He said: 'There were no snow days. Women wore stilettos and skirts in -20 degree weather.
'They don't salt the sidewalks in most places, people don't like them to do it cause it ruins their shoes.'
