2nd person charged in death of Susan Kublu-Iqqittuq

A second person has been charged in the death of Susan Kublu-Iqqittuq, whose body police believe lies in an Ottawa landfill.

Dwight Brown, 28, was arrested Sunday and appeared by video in an Ottawa court room Monday. Both Brown and Kublu-Iqqittuq's daughter, 18-year-old Lennese Kublu, are charged with second-degree murder and indignity to a dead body

Brown was arrested Jan. 15 in Toronto and charged with assault with a weapon, assault, theft under $5,000, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds or property obtained by trafficking.

Ottawa police Det. Chris Benson, the lead investigator on the case, said Brown was transferred to Ottawa on Sunday to face charges related to Kublu-Iqqittuq's disappearance.

Kublu-Iqqittuq, a 37-year-old Inuk woman from Igloolik, Nunavut, had been living in Ottawa and was last seen by her family on Jan. 11.

Police believe Kublu-Iqqittuq's body was left in a dumpster near the home she shared with her daughter, then transported to the Trail Road landfill.

Officers spent the weekend searching the landfill, and Benson said forensics specialists remain there Monday to aid the search team.

"We're looking at every item to make sure to determine whether it's evidence of value or not," he said. "Given the fact it's a landfill site, it's a difficult situation to search, and the weather also makes the conditions very difficult for the officers on scene searching there."

On Monday, Justice Peter Doody ordered Brown not to be in any kind of communication with seven individuals including Kublu.

Benson confirmed Brown and Kublu were in a relationship, and said police have no information pointing to any other suspects.

In a Facebook post around the time Kublu-Iqqittuq and Kublu first disappeared, a family member identified Brown as Kublu's ex-boyfriend. The family member also said Kublu-Iqqittuq has three other children.

Brown is expected to make his next court appearance at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 5.
