THE NEXT ACT OF THE KING, THE PRINCE AND THE WANNBE KING FARCE

HERE'S MY QUESTION: WHAT'S IN IT FOR TURKEY?

So as the "disappearance" of Jamal Khashoggi, an American Permanent Resident (Green Card Holder) keeps on rolling along, the New York Times (finally doing their job) have identified nine of the Saudi thirteen as members of Saudi Arabia's security services.   This thanks to the Turks.  So as we await breathlessly for the next act of this Shakespearean tragi-comedy, I have a question.  What's in it for the Turks?  Why did they initially blow the whistle on the Saudis and why do they keep on supplying the West with a fairly constant stream of additional info about the whole sordid episode?

I pose this as a serious question.  I can't for the life of me figure out whey Erdogen just didn't remain silent about the mysterious disappearance of Jamal Kashoggi from the git go?  Are Turkey and Saudi Arabia some sort of political rivals in the Middle East?  Is it because of our support of the Kurds in Syria who, with American assistance, cleared Eastern Syria of ISIS?  Turkey sees the Kurds, domestic Kurds at least, as terrorists.  Is Turkey trying to split the U.S. from our alliance with Saudi Arabia?  One would think that since Erdogan has arrested, jailed and tried - what is it -  40,000 "enemies of the state" (government slugs for the most part) and has blamed a Turkish Imam living in Pennsylvania for the attempted coup a couple of years ago that he would be totally down with Mr. Authoritarian Donald Trump.

As I said "What's in it for Turkey?"  Remember, all of the information that we know about the killing of Khashoggi has come from the Turkish government and they continue to supply info to this day.  We learned yesterday that Turkish authorities investigating the Saudi Consulate had discovered blood underneath apparently freshly applied paint.  This, after they released photos of a cleaning crew entering the consulate before the Turks had access.   The latest releases, are copies of some of the perpetrators Saudi passports plus info revealing close proximity if not relationships with several of the men to Prince Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS for short).  It's all a bit too much to think that Erdogen is simply acting like a good guy on the world stage.  This is just not his style.

So the mystery continues and Trump continues to pimp for the Saudis.  We were told two days ago that an announcement was imminent and that the regime would confess that the murder and dismemberment of Jamal Khashoggi was the result of an interrogation gone south.  But then what was the need to interrogate Khashoggi in the first place?  Yes, as a reporter he had been critical of the Kingdom over the years but he's also praised MBS for his reformist actions like allowing women to drive.  It's not as if he's a terrorist - yes, he did interview Osama bin Laden in the past but then so did many American reporters prior to 9-11.

Our President has gone from "if there is any connection to King Salman or his son, it will be bad and we will take swift action" to providing the Saudi's with the "rogue killers" excuse.  Not exactly the kind of response I was looking for.  Of course it used to be that we, the U.S., was loathe to criticize the Saudi regime in the past because we were so dependent upon Saudi oil.  Remember the two devastating OPEC boycotts back in the 1970's and the miles long lines of cars and trucks snaking away from virtually every gas station in the country?  Well, although Trump doesn't seem to care since he has cut funding for renewable energy sources, we are now pretty much un-beholden to Saudi Arabia on this front.  The other front where we are still in lock step with the Kingdom, is the pushback against Iran.

But here's the real deal about whether or not the thirteen murderers (alleged) had close ties to the King or the Prince.  No Saudi with even a small percentage of functioning brain cells would undertake such an operation without the express approval of the regime unless they were out to topple the regime.  (It's happened before.)  Why?  Well, in the Saudi system of justice is swift and such acts would result in public beheadings.

But that's in Saudi Arabia.  We here in the U. S. still have a justice system as flawed as it is and as lately battered as its become, we still have the rule of law, and we still do have international alliances - even if shaken - where the outright murder of an American resident by a so-called ally and international partner, would result in severe condemnation, at least, the recalling of our ambassador, perhaps economic sanctions or maybe even the cancellation of arms sales.

Let's see what kind of President Trump is.  Well, we know what kind of President Trump is but let's see how he responds to what is the most severs crisis of his Presidency.

Take Care.  But watch Turkey.  Is There More To Come?
