Perth's Ku De Ta appoints administrator, dozens of staff walk out
About 15 months after the Ku De Ta restaurant complex opened its doors on Perth's Swan River, voluntary administrators have been appointed to the struggling venture.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has confirmed that administrators have been appointed to asses the business's future.
The business is based on the company's Bali restaurant.
Chef Liam Atkinson has posted an Instagram message in which he said he and many kitchen staff had walked out.
He said the hard decision to walk away was made to "show the company, who have decided not to pay its staff and suppliers, are not getting away with taking advantage of us".
Atkinson went on to thank Ku De Ta's supporters, suppliers and all the loyal staff.
"You guys have been an inspiration," he said.
One restaurant to stay open: Administrator
KPMG administrator Clint Joseph confirmed executive chef Liam Atkinson and about 25 other staff members walked out on Saturday.
Mr Joseph said that as a result, Ku Dining and The West restaurants had been closed indefinitely while remaining staff would work at The Deck — which will operate as usual.
"It will continue to trade for the time being, but the Ku Dining and The West will be closed … it is definitely the administrators' intention to continue to trade and find a buyer for the business," Mr Joseph said.
He said staff would be paid from when the administrators were appointed on Friday, but could not confirm if they would receive money owed for the balance of that fortnight.
It was also not known if suppliers would receive all funds owed to them.
Regular customer Frank LeFaucheur said WA's economic downturn had affected a lot of restaurants in the city.
"I go to lunch with a group of guys once a month, type of thing, but a lot of people used to go to lunch every Friday and they don't anymore, and that's an indicator," Mr LeFaucheur said.
"You walk through Northbridge and a lot of long-standing cafes and the buildings have sat empty for five years now."
