How you could live in paradise and earn £50k a year

How you could live in paradise, earn £50k a year, and barely lift a finger: Tiny Atlantic island seeks immigration officer for airport where only one plane lands per week

  • The South Atlantic island of St Helena is looking for a senior immigration officer
  • The job is to oversee the arrival of the one plane a week that lands at its airport
  • The job advert says the island has a 'warm and friendly population of 4,500'

It might just be the world's cushiest job.

The South Atlantic island of St Helena wants a senior immigration officer to oversee the arrival of the one plane a week that usually lands at its shiny new airport.

But the successful candidate for the £50,000-a-year post need not worry about becoming bored or lonely on the isolated island.

According to the job advert, the British overseas territory is a 'sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes' with a 'warm and friendly population of 4,500'.

It receives just one regular weekly commercial flight from South Africa, although more are planned, at what has been dubbed the 'world's most useless airport'.

It cost the British taxpayer £300 million and opened last year after being beset by problems, including the strong winds that prevent planes with a capacity of more than 70 passengers landing.

Now Basil Read Holdings, the airport's South African operator, is in financial difficulties and last month requested the suspension of its shares while it seeks new funding.

The Department for International Development declined to say if the taxpayer would be required to step in.

A spokesman said: 'There will be no interruption to air services to St Helena in the short term. We will continue to ensure adequate contingency plans are available.'
