A Mount Isa resident whose flight was forced to land in Longreach when an engine failed says the incident is just the latest example of the ongoing poor service provided by Qantas to residents of western Queensland.

Passenger Kerri Capewell also complained that Mt Isa residents were paying "enormous amounts" for flights into the north-west Queensland city.

The Alliance Airlines flight, operating on behalf of QantasLink, landed safely this afternoon with no injuries, but engineers will have to be flown into Longreach Airport to make repairs to the plane.

Ms Capewell said the flight took off late and had been in the air for just over an hour when the plane began circling Longreach for about 20 minutes.

"I felt the plane slow and sort of descend and I said to the man beside me we can't possibly be descending into Mt Isa because we haven't been in the air long enough," she said.

"A message came over the radio to say there was technical issues with the plane.

"When we got on the ground, the pilot let us know that an engine had actually failed in the plane.

"I think there was quite a few mixed emotions, there were a couple of women crying — I think it was just the shock of knowing an engine had failed.

"We've been here now in Longreach for about two hours … we really are quite delayed. We do have a plane coming in to pick us up.

"It is just another disappointing time and another incident for Mt Isa residents who are paying enormous amounts of money for flights in and out."

Ms Capewell said she paid $665 for her one-way flight from Brisbane to Mt Isa.

In April, a senate inquiry heard it was more costly for regional Queenslanders to fly around the state than it was to travel to many international destinations.

Father Michael Lowcock from Mount Isa was on board the flight on Monday and said it was not the first time something like this had happened.

"I suppose everyone is a bit annoyed, I suppose you know, but you can't do anything about it except I said to the fellow beside me like, 'It seems to occur more often on this route than most other routes doesn't it'," he said.

Alliance Airlines made no comment about the incident, saying it preferred to leave any response to Qantas.

Qantas spokesman Stephen Moynihan said they understood the cost of airfares was a concern to some communities.

"Mount Isa residents are able to access 'resident fares' which offer a discount on services from Mount Isa to Brisbane and Townsville for eligible residents," he said.

"We are regularly monitoring Alliance's performance on the route."
