NO, HOUSE STAFFER DIDN'T DESTROY DNC SERVER OR ENGAGE IN IMPROPERLY STEALING CLASSIFIED INFORMATION
In the fast-paced world of Presidential conspiracy theories and public accusations that he/she/they are out to destroy Trump and his Presidency, we often don't have sufficient time to absorb even the gloss of one Trump scandal before another one takes its place. Often we are faced with multiple conspiracies and scandals simultaneously - ICE separating kids from their parents, Scott Pruitt finally being fired, Michael Cohen shifting towards flipping against Trump, Paul Manafort spending 13 hours a day in jail awaiting a trial - and the media (and us) rarely have time for follow-ups we are so bombarded with episode after episode of politics in Trumpland.
But there were a couple articles about one such self-generated Trump scandal that did receive a bit of follow up in the New York Times and Washington Post. Here's what Trump tweeted about one "turned out to be fake" scandal:
Now the Imran Awan scandal is nothing close to the importance of the Russian rigging of a Presidential Election. In fact, it's quite minor (unless you are Donald Trump) although it is related. The scandal that is, not the facts. Mr. Awan is a brown-skinned Pakistani- American and thus fair game for reputation and family destruction by Trump and his right wing enablers. Mr. Awan was accused by as yet unnamed House of Representative members of being involved in the hack and/or destruction of the DNC servers that gave rise to the infamous Wikileaks leaks that implicated Hillary Clinton in a vast conspiracy to ........... to do something that I can't recall at the moment but it surely had to do with her e-mails. Or maybe it was the murder of Vince Foster. As I noted, the fast paced Breaking News Headlines of Trump conspiracy and allegation memes far outpaces our ability to remember them all.
Well, Mr. Awan was arrested last summer on charges that had conspired to steal hardware, data and perhaps even Democratic National Committee emails published by WikiLeaks. I mean such horrific actions by this man. Was he a Pakistani intelligence service mole? A deep State operative working tirelessly to get Trump out of office? But in the end, after investigations by Federal authorities and a hearing before a Federal Judge, Mr. Awan was indeed found guilty of one charge. No, nothing to do with improper activities designed to undermine the integrity, safety and national security of the United Sates, but that of providing false information on an application for a residential bank loan. Apparently, he mis-represented his wife's residence that she owned as being her primary residence as opposed to the real condition of the property as a rental property. So, yes, brown-skinned Pakistani-American, Imran Awan did indeed commit a crime, that of providing a false statement on a bank loan. But after interviewing over 40 witnesses the FBI and other law enforcement investigators determined that Mr. Awan had engaged in no improper anything related to the House computer systems or hard drives or relaying any improper information anywhere and had nothing to to with the hacking of the DNC computers. Zip. Undo. Nothing.
All those charges were dismissed at his criminal hearing before Judge Chutkan and he was convicted of lying on a local loan application to the Congressional Federal Credit Union Federal for which he did receive $165,000. In the plea agreement here's what Federal prosecutors had to say:
“Particularly, the Government has found no evidence that your client illegally removed House data from the House network or from House Members’ offices, stole the House Democratic Caucus Server, stole or destroyed House information technology equipment, or improperly accessed or transferred government information, including classified or sensitive information,” prosecutors wrote."
So this Deep State, Democratic, Debbie-Wasserman Shultz, anti-Trump, attack on the President and the future of America comes down to a false statement on a home loan application. Unfortunately for Mr. Awan, he's lost his job, his reputation is shot, and he will have difficulty finding future employment unless he can find something on the night shift at his local 7-11. This is what happens when we have Republicans in Congress and a President who seem capable of doing anything to avoid discovering the truth of Trumps involvement or lack thereof with Russia during the 2016 Presidential Election campaign. And this includes destroying a man who had done nothing wrong but got caught up in baseless Presidential tweets and conspiracy theories.
I can't recall if the resolution of this horrific scandal that threatened the very foundations of American democracy was covered in the media. It might have been but given all the Trump-related Breaking News Headlines we face every single day of our lives, it would have been easy to miss. And, after all, Mr. Awan isn't a real American, is he. He's a Pakistani- American so no harm done, right?
This case illustrates just how easy it is to destroy a person when a President openly attacks someone, declares that this person is guilty of horrendous crimes against America with absolutely no proof or facts to back up his assertions. Frankly, Imran Awan ought to sue the President and maybe we can test whether a sitting President can be indicted even before Robert Mueller issues his report. He would have a very strong case. This entire incident was simply and profoundly wrong.
