Bo Burnham's New Movie Sets A Record For 2018
Following its debut at Sundance, Bo Burnham's movie, Eighth Grade, opened this past weekend in the United States--and it was a huge hit. According to Variety, the movie made $255,000 over the three-day period. That doesn't sound like a lot, but it only played in four theatres.
That works out to a per-theatre average of $63,071, which is the highest theatre average since Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs ($58,148). Eighth Grade played this weekend in New York City and Los Angeles; it's coming to other parts of the country in the upcoming weeks.
The coming-of-age movie stars Elsie Fisher as a young woman who is going through her last week of eighth grade. The story explores what it's like to be a kid today in school when social media is as ubiqutious as it is. It was written and directed by Burnham, who is perhaps best known for his comedy specials.
Eighth Grade picked up mostly good reviews; the film boasts an 80 Metascore on GameSpot sister site Metacritic. It has a 99% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Eighth Grade is an absolute delight that stings with truth. It's heartbreaking, heartwarming, and a total charmer," Entertainment Weekly writer Chris Nashawaty said in his review.
