Spectacular scenes at an Australian lake have seen tourists flock to the area for a glimpse of the rare sight.

South Australia's Lake Eyre has been transformed into a dazzling kaleidoscope of bright colours.  

It only floods about once every 50 years, and rains from two months ago have now made their way to the lake from north Queensland.

The lake turns blue and white when it floods, and attracts a number of birds including swans and pelicans.

Fish have also begun to make their way to the lake, and wildflowers can be seen growing around it.

Australia's largest desert lake turns pink at low water levels as salt dilutes and pink algae becomes present.

Lake Eyre is the lowest point on the Australian continent, and it becomes completely flooded only three times every 160 years.

It only floods about once every 50 years, and rains from two months ago have now made their way to the lake from north Queensland

Heavy tropical rains have made their way from Queensland, travelling more than 1000km across the Australian outback.  

Local publican Trevor Wright told the ABC the lake had begun to fill later than usual.

'I think it is quirky, I haven't seen such a late entry into it,' Mr Wright said.

'We're in May and it's just starting out now. 

'I would be quite a few decades since it has started off at this late in the year.'

He said the floodwaters were a 'bluey, brackish, pinkish colour because of the saline water that is being flushed out of the creeks'.
