White House Nazi enabler Jeff Sessions, the man who enacted the new administration-plotted "zero tolerance" policy that jails asylum-seekers, separates them from their children, and places the children in separate detention camps as "deterrent" to future refugees—and the "deterrent" part is both admitted by multiple members of the administration and is considered, by international treaty, a human rights crime—defended his administration from comparisons to Nazi Germany by going on the Fox News show of a prominent white supremacist icon and explaining the difference.
“It’s a real exaggeration,” he said to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham. “In Nazi Germany, they were keeping the Jews from leaving the country, but this is a serious matter.
Explaining that we're not like the Nazis because we let our targets leave, so long as they waive their rights as refugees and return home, is a low bar that the actual sitting attorney general is setting out. It is also, of course, historically wrong. The fascist leaders of the Third Reich were more than happy, in the beginning, to let their targets flee the country. The escalation of their plans occurred when other countries, including ours, refused to take them in.
This was the same episode of the Laura Ingraham Nazi Funtime Hour in which Ingraham dismissed the child internment centers, and we are not joking here, as "basically summer camps." She asserted that the incarcerated children could otherwise become fresh recruits for MS-13. And she praised the government efforts to separate them from their parents and "protect" them, asserting the imprisoned children "live a lot better" than our own impoverished children and veterans do.
All of this is the plain rhetoric of ethnic cleansing. It is the argument written out in the Final Solution and in every other act of genocide. It argues that a refugee or other fragile population is criminal by nature, is (again, in Ingraham's televised speech) an invasion threatening national sovereignty and prosperity, that even the children of that population are not legitimately children, but either mere unwitting pawns or themselves a criminal threat, and that government acts to round up and imprison those targets are, in fact, beneficial acts that the targets should be grateful for. It is the rhetoric of ethnic cleansing, every word of it, and it is here being bantered on by the top law enforcement officer in the nation and by the preferred media outlet of the state.
As for Ingraham, those that manage Fox News could intervene at any time to block her and their other hosts from the rhetoric of dictatorships and ethnic purges; they do not. They very noticeably and pointedly do not. It has risen to the point where other top stars of the corporation have condemned these shows and pronounced themselves "disgusted to work at" the company—but there has been no larger exodus, yet. And so the rhetoric of Nazi Germany and other state-sponsored acts of violence, dismissing refugees presenting themselves at the border as something akin to vermin that need to be controlled and expunged, continues.
