Harris Andrews laughing in dressing room after sickening hit
Lions vice-captain Harris Andrews was laughing and making jokes in the change rooms at quarter-time after being knocked out during the match against GWS on Saturday afternoon at the Gabba, it has been revealed.
But the defender's condition subsequently deteriorated and he was taken to hospital where it was discovered he was suffering from bleeding on the brain and a severe concussion.
"I came down to the rooms at quarter-time, just to check on how he was doing and he was joking with people," Lions chairman Andrew Wellington said.
"He was fine at that point."
"He started to feel unwell so the immediate response is to take him to hospital and get checked [him] out."
Andrews is not the only Lions players to have suffered a severe concussion over the years.
Former captain Jonathan Brown was forced into retirement due to several serious concussions and facial fractures.
While one of their rising stars Justin Clarke was forced to retire at the age of just 22, after a training mishap left him seriously concussed and affected his memory and movement.
"You can't sit here today and easily predict what a player's recovery time will be, how they'll recover, how they'll respond to the physical pressure of coming back to training, we've just got to take it carefully," Wellington added.
'Tough to watch'
Andrews' teammates didn't initially realise just how serious his predicament was.
But it soon became obvious to everyone on the field that the Lions vice-captain had suffered a serious head knock.
"It was pretty hard to see Harris on the ground, making some noises and obviously right out of it," Lions ruckman Stefan Martin said.
"I think both teams at that point just felt sympathy for Harris, but it's obviously really hard to watch."
Martin said also understands why Andrews may have initially felt OK after his head knock.
The ruckman suffered a similar concussion in 2016, while playing against the Gold Coast Suns.
"I remember when I got a head knock a few years ago, I kind of felt pretty good straight after," he said.
"I was trying to convince them that I could go back out there."
"I didn't realise at the time that it was just not realistic."
"I passed the concussion test straight after the hit."
Suns defender Steven May was handed a five-match suspension for the ugly hit on Martin.
GWS forward Jeremy Cameron will face the AFL tribunal tonight over the Andrews incident and is expected to face four to six weeks out of the game.
Martin said a hefty suspension was warranted.
"I think it's probably appropriate," Martin said.
"All players know these days that those kind of hits are going to be met with some repercussions."
Andrews will see his neurosurgeon for further scans in two weeks and his doctors are confident he will make a full recovery.
